    Unable to upload/attach files
    « on: January 21, 2008, 06:10:41 AM »
I'm having a problem with my internet connection. I'm using the latest versions of both IE and Firefox, and everything works fine, except for the fact that I cannot upload files to hosting sites, or attach files to e-mails. It has only been a few days (two at max) since this started, but it is imperative that I correct this problem ASAP, as all my courses this semester require the work to be turned in digitally by e-mailing it to the course instructor!  :o

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      More info please.
      Version of windows.
What happens when you try to upload files? Any error messages?
Have you recently changed anything on your computer? Added or removed software for example?
What protection software do you have installed? (Antivirus, Firewalls, Anti-spyware, etc).

Current version of Windows is XP Media Center Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2.

In Firefox (My browser of choice), I'm defaulted to the "Problem loading page" page when I try and upload, saying "the connection to the server was reset while the page was loading".

There haven't been any drastic changes to my computer recently, no installs/unistalls or things of that nature between now and the time when I could upload.

Currently my only running anti-virus program is Webroot Spy Sweeper.

Webroot spysweeper is an anti-spyware software not anti-virus. So I would say you're dangerously under protected.
I suggest you go through the steps here to make sure your computer is clean before trying anything else.

Thanks a lot for the warning. I had reason to suspect I might have a virus, but I had no idea it'd gotten this bad... hopefully it's still repairable without a reformat.  :-X

            Here are the logs:
(Since I can't attach files currently, I'll unfortunately have to post them directly in the thread)

                1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

                2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

                3. Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries:

                - O2 - BHO: {27a4e006-0e6d-8ec8-e854-09ff95efd0b0} - {0b0dfe59-ff90-458e-8ce8-d6e0600e4a72} - (no file)

                - O2 - BHO: (no name) - {99344B55-1E31-4F6E-8294-4D2579A164AA} - (no file)

                - O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9D12F5A7-8624-4809-A832-318BA4777A19} - (no file)

                - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [1c4e3ba7] "rundll32.exe" "C:\WINDOWS\system32\iluuoppd.dll",b

                - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BM1f7d083b] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ppnrmqpw.dll",s

                - O20 - Winlogon Notify: fccbywx - fccbywx.dll (file missing)

                - O23 - Service: DomainService - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xhegkahv.exe (file missing)

                4. Click on "Fix checked" button.

                5. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (keep tapping F8 key, when your computer starts)

                6. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to "Show hidden files, and folders".

                7. Delete following files/folders (if present):

                - iluuoppd.dll, ppnrmqpw.dll, xhegkahv.exe files from C:\WINDOWS\system32

                8. Turn off System Restore:

                - Windows XP:
                   1. Click Start.
                   2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
                   3. Click the System Restore tab.
                   4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
                   5. Click Apply.
                   6.  When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
                   7. Click OK.
                - Windows Vista:
                   1. Click Start.
                   2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
                   3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
                   4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
                   5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
                   6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
                   7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
                   8. Click OK

                9. Restart in Normal Mode.

                10. Turn System Restore on.

                11. Post new HijackThis log.

                  We're almost there.
                  Somehow, this:
                  - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BM1f7d083b] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ppnrmqpw.dll",s
                  didn't want to go.
I need to know, if you can see ppnrmqpw.dll file in  C:\WINDOWS\system32, and if so, what happens, when you try to delete it (in Safe Mode, if in Normal Mode it won't go).

Yeah, I noticed that one was the only one that returned as well.

However, upon checking the system32 folder, the actual file isn't there... (I checked twice, both in normal and safe mode, with hidden files visible.)

                    And now, after the restarts, running HijackThis no longer shows the " - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BM1f7d083b] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ppnrmqpw.dll",s " entry.

Testing this post to see if I can attach the log this time instead of posting it...

EDIT: Seems like it attached fine. Kinda weird if you ask me..

                    Everything looks clean. Good job.

                    1. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
                    2. Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner

Yeah, everything appears to be in working order. And I have CCleaner now, I used it earlier before running all the virus scanners.

Thanks a lot for all your help, I really appreciate it! Now if only you'll do my Visual Basic homework for me... :P

So is everything in order now? Can you upload again?
If you haven't already done so, you should download a copy of AVG free for virus protection.

I'll download the AVG, too. Thanks again for all the help!

It was one of those free 1-year installations that came with the computer, but I didn't pay to renew it.

Then, you need to uninstall it. Ues removal tool: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105 rather, then Add\Remove.
                            After that...
