restore discs for windows ME

hi, i have had my pc for 4 and a half years and i am now havign a problem installing my restore discs as the message reads  

CDR101 READING DRIVE Y

when i try to restore it it says this and it will not restore my pc please help me as i am missing files and cant find any way of retrieving them so want to restore back to factory settings...

    sue......Are you able to reboot and as it starts tap the F8 key repeatedly and when it offers you differant options for starting ...choose the last known good configuration .

    Have you EVER changed your motherboard from when you bought the computer to now? Has it ever been replaced while in the "shop" for repairs?
