    COD4 Recommended Specs
    « on: January 27, 2008, 06:26:56 AM »
CPU: 2.4 GHz dual core or better is recommended
RAM: 1GB for XP; 2GB for Vista is recommended
Harddrive: 8GB of free hard drive space
Video card: 3.0 Shader Support recommended. Nvidia Geforce 7800 or better or ATI Radeon X1800 or better

These are CoD4's recommended specs, my question is if I need to buy more RAM, or a new CPU, I'm set for video card.

I know the recommendations says 1GB is enough, but who knows.

    Currently I have
    1GB of RAM
    and a Pentium 4 3.2GHZ Processor (Outdated I know)

if I need a new CPU, would you recommend

    or the more expensive

What video card do you currently have?
And I actually wouldn't recommend either of those CPUs.
I would highly recommend this if you have the money and if your board supports it.
Also, 2Gb of RAM will help.

Isn't dual core completely pointless for gaming because games never use both cores? Oh and that game runs well on my system, AMD Athlon 4200+, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 8600.

The games that utilizes more than one core are already here. Like UT 3 for example.

And from what I've read COD 4 doesn't run well on single core processors either.

Deerpark is right, games are starting to take advantage of multiple cores.  Even if they don't, think logically - if you have one core, and your PC is running Windows and maybe some background apps plus the game, COD4 doesn't have as much CPU power to draw on.
On the other hand, if you have a dual core, one core can be dedicated entirely to running the game, with the other core handling background threads and also the game.
        See where I'm coming from?
Eredell: nice card, I agree that you are sorted as regards your video card.  Get a Core 2 Duo and 2Gb of RAM to support that and you'll be flying along.

alright, cool, thanks everyone for all your help.

one more question for you though Calum, As of where I stand right now. How do you suppose the game would handle, around on Medium settings?

          It should run pretty well.
2Gb of RAM would make the game feel a lot smoother and decrease the loading time, it wouldn't necessarily increase the fps a whole lot.
A faster CPU would help during intensive shootouts with bullets and projectiles flying all over the place.  You may experience a little slowdown here with your current CPU.
However, I do think your machine should handle the game pretty well overall.
