help with windows 98
« on: January 28, 2008, 07:22:03 PM »
YES Im still running with Windows 98! My problem began when trying to start windows I got a > WINDOWS PROTECTION ERROR> restart computer, this error would keep comming up with each restart.
I started the comp in safe mode and following the STEP BY STEP CONFIRMATION and going through process of elimanation that when I bypassed > symtdi . vxd < the computer started normally.
Any ideas about this because I haven't a clue and really no nothing when it comes to computers. Is there a fix for this? Do I/can I just keep doing this to get my computer to start?
thanks in advance for any help!

Lizzee - Welcome to the CH forums.

Symtdi.vxd is reported to be used by one of the Symantec products such as Norton AV etc.  Are you running, or have you uninstalled, any Symantec product?

This is going to sound stupid.. but how do I do that?  ::)
Do I have to uninstall 98 first?  My comp came with 98 already installed although I do have the Win 98 disc...

Yes, well there you are, typical Norton headache.

I know you will probably have subscribed to Norton but I recommend that you cut your losses and totally uninstall it.   The uninstall instructions are here although they refer to Windows XP rather than 98, you will have to tailor them to suit 98.  e.g. item 1 refers to ERUNT which will not backup the 98 registry as it is intended for New Tech systems.

But first you should download a suitable FREE antivirus program which you can install after getting rid of Norton.   I suggest AVAST from here.

But then you might want to persevere with Norton - your call.

Good luck

Are you noticing a performance increase with Norton out of the way ? ?
Just curious.
