DSL ceases to work unless I take receiver off the phone
« on: February 02, 2008, 12:06:45 PM »
About the same time in the evenings, my DSL quits working.  This will happen 3 or 4 days in a row, then not happen again for months.  When it does happen, I can take the receiver off the phone and the DSL will start working as long as the receiver is off the phone.  I have been shuffled thu the AT&T Support tool, the AT&T chat tech, the tech in the Phillipines and finally another AT&T source which hung up in the middle of me answering the phone.  I have decided they have no answer so I am searching.

Are filters on phone jacks installed?

My Modem and all filters were supplied by AT&T and installed by a computer technician.

I'd ask ISP to come to your place to check lines.

Not sure that AT&T would do that without charging an arm and a leg.  And I have no faith in AT&T technicians.  They would most likely tell me that they would have to come while I was having the problem and that is unpredictable.  I can do the internet, using my method of taking the phone receiver off the phone but I don't like being without the phone.

In most cases, because you pay for your service, they are required to come.
Tell them, you're quitting. They'll show up next day.

Oh, they will come alright.  Just like Dish satellite.  But always a service charge.

Do you know any neighbors who are also using AT&T DSL?  If you do, ask them whether they've ever had this problem.

Is your computer connected directly to the modem via cable?

What things, if anything, did AT&T tech support have you try to resolve this?

You need to have filters installed on EVERY jack in the house whether they are being used or not....

Hmm, I have one unused jack in my place that has no filter on it.  Doesn't seem to cause any problem.

I have filters on every phone jack.  If it were the filters, would it happen at approximately the same time of an evening and at no other time?

My modem is connected directly with my computer using the connection supplied by AT&T

There are no close neighbors.  I am pretty isolated.  I will check with people in our town because we can only get AT&T service at this time.  Our phone lines were Southwestern Bell for local and AT&T took them over.  A monopoly for sure.  Threats don't bother them much.  They are the only phone company in town.

I had the same problem a few years ago where I used to live.  I went thru the same stuff you did with the same results  :P

One day, after multiple calls to AT&T the problem stopped.  I didn't do anything on my end so it HAD to be on theirs.  I don't know what they did but afterwards I never had that problem.  It IS them.  :-X

I thank you very much.  You are the first person with this problem that has answered me.  And I do appreciate all the answers.  It just seems like such a weird happening.  Glad and relieved to know it is not me, modem, computer or filters.  Thanks everyone!!!
