PHP problem
« on: February 03, 2008, 10:17:13 PM »
Ok, bit of a story to this, so be patient...

Background: Typically, when I have speed problems with my ISP, PHP and XML pages come in as text only. After my ISP fixes the issue, the pages start loading normally again.

Issue: ISP had one such incident over the weekend, and as usual PHP and XML pages would come in text only. The issue was fixed Saturday afternoon. However, on both my laptop and desktop, XML pages are back to normal but PHP pages won't load right. They kind of half load as the PHP page and half load as text only. This happens in both IE6 and Firefox 2. I'm in my office at the school now using their internet and I am not having an issue with PHP pages.

What might cause this issue at home and not at another location? Is it possibly something my ISP has done? (different provider than the school I believe). I plan on calling them tonight when I get home, but I have no idea where to start explaining this to them. I don't know much about how PHP pages work so I'm looking for suggestions.

I will try to post screen shots when I get back home (a few hours from now) so you can see exactly what I'm talking about.

Since your school has different ISP, I'd call your ISP, first.

Because I run at a high resolution (1280x1024), I'll post these on Photobucket so they won't make the thread display weird. At least you can see what I'm talking about. Ringed my ISP earlier, but they seemed clueless. Gonna call again and see if I can get someone a little more knowledgeable about this.

Just out of curiosity though, how is PHP loading and my ISP related? I agree, I do think this is the issue since I don't have this problem at the school, but my ISP's service reps don't seem to have a clue about what I'm talking about.

Ok, speed has gone slow again. Just got off the phone with them and they say they've had yet another "hardware failure" today. Doesn't explain why PHP hasn't worked properly for the last 2 days, but looks like I have to wait for them to fix it and see if I still get PHP problems after that.

Well, ISP says it's nothing on their end. And the same thing finally happened on my school's internet as well. However, at both locations it seems to be less of a problem than it was before. Now it's only some of the buttons and stuff missing. Most everything else has returned to normal.

I've tried clearing the cache for both IE and Firefox. I'm not familiar with how PHP works, but both don't seem to be handling it well.

Using your laptop, or same thing happens on other machines, too?

Where have you been lately, anyway? It's almost like MIA.
Anywho, if other school computers are fine, it must be something about your laptop. Hey, you're computer pro.

Well, that's the thing, it's my desktop too.

I've check and rechecked for viruses, spyware, etc. Only PHP pages are having a problem. I've searched and searched but have found nothing. Like I said, I know little about PHP or web design in general. My expertise is hardware, Windows, and software problems.

I mostly haven't been around because the forums won't display correctly and it annoys the heck outta me lol

OK, let's put thing together.
At home, both, desktop, and laptop have same problem.
At school, your laptop is the only one. Other computers are fine.
Is that correct?

Yeah, that sounds about right.

However..... (don't you hate that?)..... oddly enough, I'm on my laptop now, at the school, and it's working fine again. Seems at school the problem is only periodic and not constant (???).

I'll try the laptop at home in a couple of hours and see what happens. I know the desktop wasn't working last night when I tried it.

Sorry for the stupid question here...even if it can be answered.
How can an ISP problem create this scenario ? ?

If someone can explain it in layman's terms i'd be interested in the responses...

Well, at first the different ISP was the only difference I could see. Then it started on the school's internet as well, which comes from a different ISP. Also, the problem started at the exact same time the ISP had a hardware failure a few weeks ago. I honestly don't know much about PHP, but I can't think of anything the ISP would have done that would have affected PHP pages only. I've talked to them, and they said everything should be normal now and that it was something on my end, not their end. (Of course, they always say that, don't they?)

As to how or why the problem was created... well, usually when my internet gets hosed for speed, PHP and XML pages start loading as text only. Like I said, normally this stops when my ISP replaces the gerbil that powers their server. But this time, the problem hasn't entirely fixed itself. I'm trying to find out at what level the failure occurred and who I should be talking to.

See, internet in Thailand is all controlled by CAT (Communications Authority of Thailand), if they have a failure in their equipment, everyone suffers. It goes CAT -> ISPs -> end users. ISPs are not allowed a direct line out, makes it easier for the government censor... er, I mean monitor the internet. Anyway, if it was a hardware failure at CAT, that might explain why I started having problems at school as well. To find out where the problem occurred might be difficult though. They don't always know, or willingly give out, that information.

At home, the desktop is wired directly to the router and the laptop uses wireless. At the school, the laptop is wired in the router in their library or, at times, connected wireless to a different router (not the one in the library).

I'm also going to take a look from my girlfriend's laptop tonight. She's finally back from home after Chinese New Year, so I can have access to her machine and see how if it works out or not.

Ok, well here's where I am...

I deleted my IE6 cookies, again, and PHP seems to work again. So I went in and wiped my Firefox cookies, but it's still not working right, but only in Firefox now.

I'd be shopping for a new ISP...
