Virus that perpetually restarts pc - help appreciated!
    « on: February 07, 2008, 04:40:40 AM »
    Hi

My computer has been infected with what seems to be a virus that prevents me from even getting past windows login. I had been on the internet last night and clicked on a link when the screen momentarily froze, then windows advised it was shutting down, and automatically restarted. As soon as I logged back into windows within a few seconds it did the same thing. This happened again so I decided to not try anymore as this would probably continue. I have a dell desktop 3000 , Windows xp and Explorer 5 (I think, as I am at work and can't get online at home I can't check). I also have AVG free version installed on my pc. My worry is that it may have wiped my hard drive. Can anyone suggest what to do about this? A friend suggested that I also try to retrieve my hard drive files via an external hard drive, but since I can't even get past windows log in I don't know how to go about this.

    Thank you.

    Jane

Try booting into Safe Mode. If you can log on in Safe Mode, do a Full System Scan with AVG.

If you have Hijackthis installed do a scan and post the log here.

      Hi

I am able to start the system in safe mode, and ran an avg virus scan which didn't detect anything. I ran Spybot and it removed several items, and also A Squared Free and it also removed several items, and still I can't start the computer in normal mode! Is there anything else that can be done?

      Thank you,

      Jane

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install - http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Note This will not cure any virus but may repair the computer enough to get it to boot to normal mode so we can clean it.

          Hi

I have not as yet been able to get an updated version of avg or any other up to date anti virus programmes as suggested as I can't access the internet through safe mode/safe mode with networking. Is this usual? As far as I am aware there are no problems with my broadband connection. So no Windows XP update can be performed either. I am trying to get a copy of latest avg on disc from a friend, will this work through safe mode? I only have limted internet access through work during the day, as most web pages are "blocked" with no chance of downloading anything let alone burn to disc! It all seems like a catch 22 situation...but I will try going into add/remove programmes tonight and post a list of programmes I don't recognise or am unsure about.

          Thanks,

          Jane

You may try to download free version of Avira AntiVir: http://www.free-av.com/ on working computer, update it, move it to flash drive, and run it from there on infected computer.

            Hello

I checked msconfig and on the Startup tab and a few things came up I was unsure of:

            - qttask
            - braviax
            - dlbcserv
            - nnmmno
            - ds agent
            - realsched
            - lesf

And on the control panel add/remove programmes, the following - again that I was unsure of (many of which I'm sure are fine - I'm not familiar with them!):

            - Intel(r) Proset for wired connections
            - j2se runtime environment 5.0 upgrade 11
            - j2se runtime environment 5.0 upgrade 8
            - microsoft.NET framework 1.1
            - Openmg limited patch 4.4-06-13-19-01 (install icon)
            - Openmg Secure Module 4.4.00 (install icon)
            - Viewpoint Media Player (install icon)

            Hope this helps.

            Thanks,

            Jane

            Viewpoint Media Player (install icon)

Uninstall this. The rest will be taken care of by running the rest of the guide or by the other tools we use.

              Hello

I am now able to boot up my pc in normal mode, I ran hijackthis, I've attached the log it generated. Can someone look at this to see if there's anything that needs to be removed? I have now got a copy of avg full version and will try that tonight, although I still can't access the internet to receive updates (I'm not sure or not if this has something to do with the virus or not - but it's an unlikely coincidence - I will contact my sp to run a check). I ran avg spyware and nothing was found, and avg root kit - again nothing was found. Window pop up/warning keeps flashing to advise that windows has detected spyware, so there's certainly still something hidden in the pc!

              Getting there - hopefully!

              Thanks,

              Jane

*** Go to Add\Remove, and uninstall MyWebSearch

*** 1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

              2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

              3. Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries (some entries will be checkmarked to disable unnecessary startups; in those cases (marked with *), no actual program will be removed):

              - O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [braviax] C:\WINDOWS\system32\braviax.exe
              - O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/menusearch.jhtml?p=ZCxdm238YYGB
              - O20 - AppInit_DLLs:
              - O20 - Winlogon Notify: Erass32 - Erass32.dll (file missing)

              4. Click on "Fix checked" button.

              5. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (keep tapping F8 key, when your computer starts)

              6. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options>View tab, put a checkmark next to "Show hidden files, and folders".

              7. Delete following files/folders (if present):

              - braviax.exe file from C:\WINDOWS\system32

              8. Turn off System Restore:

              - Windows XP:
                 1. Click Start.
                 2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
                 3. Click the System Restore tab.
                 4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
                 5. Click Apply.
                 6.  When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
                 7. Click OK.
              - Windows Vista:
                 1. Click Start.
                 2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
                 3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
                 4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
                 5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
                 6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
                 7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
                 8. Click OK

              9. Restart in Normal Mode.

              10. Turn System Restore on.

              11. Post new HijackThis log.

                Hi

I followed the above steps, and attached is the hijackthis log. On step 6 & 7 no braviax.exe and the folder/file wasn't there.

I also ran complete avg scan with the more up to date disc I recieved. There is no flashing windows warning of spyware being detected anymore, so I assume this is the issue resolved? Or will checking the new hijackthis log determine that?

Thanks for all your help so far!

                The log is clean.

                Last step...garbage cleaning.
Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
