could it be my hard drive?
    « on: February 03, 2008, 04:30:50 PM »
i posted about this in the microsoft section, but maybe my answer could be here?
i have been wondering if it could be my hard drive is bad?
i am at my wits end with this computer ???
    any help would be appreciated.
    thanks, toni

hi all, i am new here.
i am looking for some help.
i just updated my computer yesterday, it's windows xp.
i have windows live one care and webroot spysweeper. wich just installed a new version also.
    i have the automatic updates.
i usually leave the computer on, well, overnight I don't know what happened.
    i get this message

Windowa could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
    <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.

now i can't even get into safe mode.
it keeps coming up to a blue screen that says,
it has shut down to save it from damage.

i am pulling my hair out!!!
if anyone could help i would appreciate it sooo much.

    (hp pavilion a1340n)
the hard drive on it went this past summer, i had it under warranty, so i got the drive replace in july.

i went to the hp support site,
i printed out pages of what to do.
for some reason the thing won't recognize my recovery disks.
i have tried over and over to reboot the d**n thing.
    this comes up after:

    non-system disk or disk error

    press any key to continue

this comes up after i put the recovery disk in.
the same disks the guys used on the new hard drive in july.
could it be the disk itself?
i am just soo lost right now!!!

I am not very good at fixing computer problems.. and my warranty expired... I have a windows XP dimension E310 (dell computer). yesterday my brother just turned the computer off by pushing the button on the CPU. This morning I tired to turn the computer on and every time a blue screen pops up after a few second saying that the computer has detected a problem and needs to shut down in order to prevent damage and the error is: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

and if you see this message for the first time restart the computer.... but every time I turn it on the blue error screen wont go away, I even tried to turn it on SAFE MODE.. even that doesnt work... Anyone have any clue what the problem is or how to fix it??? Or any other tip and help??

Thanks for your help in advace!

this is excatly the same problem i am having.
so i am trying to use my recovery disk, but the screen keeps coming up "non-system disk or disk error

      Hi,

I see this is only your 4th or 5th post here.    Welcome to Computer Hope.

This board is   Computer Hope Forum  >>  Hardware  >>  Drivers     and I'm thinking that your question would have been best in
Computer Hope Forum  >>  Microsoft  >>  Microsoft Windows

I'm not your XP guru.  :)        I'm replying because I see you haven't gotten any other replies yet,   and that could well be because your post needs to be in the Windows board,  where the XP gurus would notice it sooner.

Maybe a moderator will come along, decide, and move this thread for you.

While you wait for someone else to come along,    you might like to do some background reading on this problem you've described.

Could very well be that your computer is looking to the hard drive first to boot,  and to boot from the CD you need it to look at the CD before it looks for the hd.

I'm not suggesting you take off trying things, after you read the material at the links I've posted above.   :)   Not unless you are familiar with everything mentioned.
I think that is just good stuff for you to read, which might be helpful,  for when somebody else here jumps in to try to help you.

      I hope this helps.

        thanks for your reply,
i have read alot of that stuff you posted links to, and alot of other stuff.
i went right to the hp support site.
        i have tried everything mentoined.

i thought maybe my hard drive was a problem because it was making noises, kind of like the first time i had a problem with the old hard drive.

i had my hard drive replaced in july, the tech guys had my recovery disk for the new hard drive.
the same ones i am trying to use now.

the thing is, even when i had the hard drive replaced, it still seemed to be running slow, things would freeze up often.
i am still at a loss,
        thanks again for replying,
        toni ???

i had just gotten my disk's from hp (xp)
i went to do a full recover and ended up with major issue's.
so someone willbe coming out in the next week to replace my hard drive.

Why leave it on overnight?  If you're going to do that, I suggest you get a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply, i.e. battery backup unit).
