ms-dos program display works under 98 but not xp
    « on: February 15, 2008, 05:51:01 AM »
I have an old ms-dos program that runs fine under windows 98. But under xp, the color screen is covered by equally spaced with dots and the color type face is spotty. With the black and white setting, everything is fine.
    Can you help me?
The screen is vga, 800x600 using a sis 620 video card and philips 107b monitor.
It works fine under W98 (not using se).

    Can you help me

How to manually configure the compatibility properties
You can configure the compatibility properties for a program manually if you do not want to use the wizard. The settings are the same as the options in the Program Compatibility Wizard.

To configure the compatibility properties manually:1. Right-click the link for the program that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
    2. On the Compatibility tab, click Run this program in compatibility mode, and then click one of the following options: • Windows 95
    • Windows 98
    • Windows NT 4
    • Windows 2000

    3. Under Display settings, click the appropriate display mode for the program: • Run in 256 colors.
    • Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
    • Disable visual themes.

    4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
    5. Start the program.

Thanks for your reply, but I don't think it applies. The program is running in MS-DOS under XP from a .bat file. So there are no icons or anything else to right click on. Just a shortcut to the bat file, which starts the program.

The program works fine under windows 98.

      Thanks again.

Or the .exe for the program.
Create a shortcut to the .exe on the desktop temporarily to enforce the changes...

        Thanks, that worked.
But to get full screen, I had to right click on the dos window and then select full screen.
I did not have to use the 256 colors or the smaller screen size or the other options, just run under 98.
        Thanks again

I have got a new problem.
The program is a bookkeeping program that has an interior section that is supposed to scroll and show each line item as you enter it. In the normal window (not full screen) it works. But in the full screen, it only shows the last line entered. In full screen mode, if you leave the posting screen, go to another info window, and then come back, the line items are all there.

I have changed all the setting I could find, but nothing seems to make it work.  I have tried 95 compatiblity, 256 colors, supsending themes and advanced text services - same problem.

Under the 98 system, no problem. The only other difference is that the colors are different.

The program is BBX2, a bookkeeping  program from 1998.

windows 98 has the original dos files on it while windows xp does not really run the original dos OS    you would have to make another partion with dos 6.X installed to it.

I recently learned this but windows 98 has the actually windows dos os in the system files. windows xp has dos but it's a confined version to do special task that windows xp os cannot do otherwise such as pinging   ping just being a network command that can only be done through the ms dos command prompt.

so either back to windows 98 or create new partion on hdd and install ms dos

              2. switch graphics cards
              3. run your virus scans
              4. mix and match parts
              5. just because it was thrown out doesn't mean it's all bad

                Thanks.
I have two hard disks; one with 98 and one with XP. I have to reboot each time to switch operating systems. Is there a shortcut to switch between the two?

Also, since this is an old machine, it uses a old Bios. I was told never to update a bios unless absolutely necessary. The problem is that it only allows 8 gig drives.

And last, On the 8 gig XP drive, XP is taking up 4 gig of space. When I installed, I chose not to delete the installation files. Is that what is taking up all the space? The only other thing I have installed is windows office which says it is taking only .6 gig.

                thanks again
