Clicking the IE icon gives me an error
    « on: February 18, 2008, 07:40:27 AM »
Everytime I try to get on the IE, an error box comes up with this error message:

Cannot find ' ::{2559A1F4-21D7-11D4-BDAF-00C04F60B9F0}'.  Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.

This message came up after I installed ComboFix.  How do I get rid of the error and I can't do a system restore because it won't work for me.  Please help : ) Thanks!

That looks more like a product ID # than a web address...where is it showing up ? ?
      Did you run ComboFix ?
Where was ComboFix DLoaded from ?

I just noticed you are getting assistance from EF in the Virus and Spyware section...you are in good hands.
Starting a new Topic and having others jump in will only confuse the issue and may actually slow the process down...

{2559A1F4-21D7-11D4-BDAF-00C04F60B9F0} is CLSID registry entry, but it's relevant since evilfantasy is taking care of it.

I think we have gone as far as we can with malware removal and I am out of ideas except to do a repair install. There is no install disks(s) so short of trying to get that from HP if anyone has any ideas on the error message please do advise.

The error started after running combofix. One of the functions combofix performs is setting a new restore point so this apparently triggered the error. System Restore was not working prior to combofix running so I don't think combofix is the direct cause.

      Thoughts?

EDIT: The only thing removed by combofix was:

      C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr0.dat
      C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr1.dat

I  am unclear what they do. They have been removed in a half dozen other computers I have been involved with a fix and no problems from other users.

qmgr0.dat and qmgr1.dat are files that are created/used by BITS

There was a good idea of creating a new profile to see if it works OK. The other may be (or seems to be) corrupted.

I have no doubt, evilfantasy did his best to solve the problem, so I may be of no help, as well, but I can't even say anything before I read the other thread.

I posted in the other thread but will repeat it here so others can easily assist if needed.

Creating user accounts in Vista is quite simple, once you figure out where to go in the Control Panel. All of the user account tasks are grouped under the User Accounts and Family Safety option in the Control Panel. Once you open this option, the rest of the process is quite similar to that in Windows XP.

The steps for creating a new user account in Vista are outlined below:

           1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
           2. Click User Accounts and Family Safety.
           3. Under User Accounts, click Add or remove user accounts.
           4. Click Create a new account.
           5. Type in the account name. Select the account type: Standard or Administrator.
           6. Click Create Account.
           7. Select the account you just created. Click Create a password.
           8. Type in a password for the user account and an option password hint.
           9. Click Create password.

You will now be able to log on to the computer using the account name and password you specified.

Thanks Broni, the malware is gone. It is now down to repairing the damage left behind from the malware. You are more efficient with Vista then I am so please advise at will.

Also, there wasn't much malware to start with. The corrupted settings was the biggest problem all along.

OK. I went quickly through other thread (heck of a job, evil!!!), so I apologize, if I missed something, because I have few questions.
What are the current computer problems? Just this IE error, or something else?
Is it possible to cancel the above error, and use IE, or not?
I've read, that OE opens, and closes right away. Is it still happening?
Are you using this very same computer to communicate here?
        Was Firefox tried?

This is pretty new HP computer. It should have came with Recovery CDs, or with instructions how to create them, right after the purchase. What happened?
Also, on HP computers Recovery Partition can be accessed by pressing F10 key right after computer starts.
I need those questions answered before we go any further.

Also, another option is to uninstall IE7, so it goes back to IE6, and see, if same thing happens.
