Dell inspiron 8200 not booting up
« on: February 18, 2008, 11:36:21 AM »
My dell 8200 crashed with out any life left. My nephew decided it was a motherboard problem so we purchased another MB to put in. It booted up through the bios start up to a screen saying to hit F1 to continue but nothing happened. I went into the bios to make sure the hd was recognized and the bootup would boot from the cd rom and floppy in case I needed to use the start up disk. I reformatted that hd in another dell and loaded xp on it to see if the hd worked and it did. So I reformatted it up to when the xp was about to load files and stoped the process so the inspiron could load xp on it. I put the hd in the inspiron and started it again. It booted up to the same place with the F1 posted on the screen. At one time I received a message that the NTLDR is missing. Thats why I reformatted the HUD after getting computerhopes solutions to the message no NTLDR. I have tried differant boot up sequences with no progress. Please help.

As things stand now, what happens when you press F1?
Why is this thus?  What is the reason for this thusness?

      1.  Motherboard.  Did you buy the replacement motherboard from Dell?  If so, did they say anything about a Dell indentification "tattoo" on the motherboard (BIOS)?

      2.  Installation Media.  Did the laptop come with an OEM Recovery Partition (on the hard drive), OEM Recovery CD, or an OEM Windows XP setup CD?

Are you attempting to reinstall an OEM licensed version of Windows XP?

      3.  OEM Windows XP License.  I'm reading reinstallation of OEM Windows XP media onto a computer with a motherboard replacement (Dell or third party) is problematic because the major brand computer vendors are expected to build in safe guards to restrict the license to the original computer.

      4.  Dell Support.  Maybe you should call Dell to confirm or deny this issue.  And if it is an issue what support (tools or options) they can provide to get beyond it.
