    New Hard Drive
    « on: February 14, 2008, 04:26:56 PM »
I just installed a second Harddrive on my system.  I have a Dell XPS.  The first drive is a 250 Gig, WD-Sada drive.  I added a WD 200 gig IDE.  Here's my problem:  I set the IDE as a slave and did not touch the SADA drive.  When I turn on the system I get this message:  Press F1 to continue or F2 to go to setup.  When I go to setup I find the following.  SADA Raid is set to on.  HD 1 is off and when I turn HD2 to auto and exit nothing happens.  The system is no seeing the new drive.  Any Ideas?

The IDE drive needs to be formatted before Windows will recognise it...use the utility CD that shipped with the drive...
Also when you use the auto-detect function in the BIOS you need to hit Enter and let it find it ...
Then you hit F10 to save changes and exit and then Y for Yes...the machine will re-boot automatically.

I tried that but, the new drive does not show up on the list for formatting.  It does not appear on the list under devices either.  I tried what you said in setup but all it does is switch from auto to none.  For some reason its not showing up on my system.  Any ideas?

I just noticed you have HDD 1 turned off in setup...turn it on and repeat the procedure.

The first listing is SADA Raid.   If I turn that of I get SADA drive 1
SADA drive 2 then Hard Drive master and Hdd Slave.

The only settings choice i get is off or auto on all of them, never detect.

        Any Ideas?

BTW thank you for your help.

DLoad and use the diagnostics from the drive manuf. site to prepare that drive for use...

Thank You.  It worked. All installed.  Now I have to format the C: drive and reinstall windows.  Hope that will bring my usb ports back.  Thanks again.

I'm having a similar problem.  My second drive fried last week.  I installed a new WD yesterday, but am having some challenges with initial booting on startup.  Can you tell me what the boot screen should look like in a typical setup?
