Chat content being blocked
« on: February 23, 2008, 11:32:01 AM »
Hi guys

I'm using IE7 *NOW FIREFOX 2.0.0.12* & XP.

I think in applying some parental controls I managed to block chat content on my sons laptop. As the wife uses the same comp to play bingo aswell, I need to re-allow the chat function. I have disabled 'content advisor' under internet options & also parental controls in McAfee (total security).

The site is a Bingo site (www.galabingo.co.uk) which has a Java chat box. The page loads fine, but the chat box displays a 'connection time out' error message.

I tried an IE reset under the advanced tab in internet options aswell which made no difference & also made sure I had the latest Java installed incase it was that.

What else can I do?

I can't check that chat box, since I'm not a member, but since FF doesn't work either, it's not IE parental control fault. I'd rather blame McAfee (not for the first time...). Did you try System Restore?

No, it started happening quite some time ago & so I wouldn't know how far to go back - don't really want to go down that route.

I've tried the site on a different computer & it worked fine so it's not the site.

I honestly can't see anything in relation in McAfee, as I said I've disabled parental controls (even though it's only keyword/image blocking). The other options in McAfee are Firewall, virus protection, spam filter, personal information protection, password vault etc nothing to do with it.

Absolute mystery... I'm out of options...

Maybe Java got corrupted? Try to uninstall/reinstall.

Hey

I thought I'd have another stab at trying to fix this...

I uninstalled/reinstalled Java - no luck

I've reset all internet options to standard

I'm thinking of trying to restore windows (sfc /scannow) but not a full system restore. The only problem I have is that the laptop came with Windows pre-installed so I don't have a disc.

The laptop does have a partitioned HD with one partition containing a 'recovery' icon, I'm presuming this is Windows?

Recovery partition will most likely have one option: restore your computer to factory settings.
What laptop brand is it?

SFC replaces/repairs any Windows system files that are damaged/missing...it will not touch any other files.
It's worth a shot.
Start/Run sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Let it finish and re-boot.

I tried it last night. Took about 45 minutes to scan, then at the end it just closed without any messages so I take it there were no problems? although I'm sure there's some kind of message with words to that affect?

Anyway, I tried that *censored* site again after but it's still not working. All other flash on that site is fine, just the chat box.

Does anyone know a different site that has a flash chat box that I could check?

Java chat and Flash chat are 2 different beasts...
If it's Flash chat use the Adobe flash un-installer and then DLoad a fresh install for it...

Ah I see, didn't know that  ::)

When I right click the chat box, I get a little box come up with 'about abode flash player 9' so it's obviously Abode (duh).

What's the best way to uninstall it?

Under add/remove programs, I have:

Abode flash player ActiveX
Abode Shockwave Player

McAfee may be a culprit. If you want to uninstall it temporarily, you better use their removal tool: http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105

McAfee is as much fun to get rid of as Norton's...

Thanks guys

I've had a little think about it & as it's only that one site (that I know of) I'm debating whether or not just to live with it. Theres no guarantee that removing McAfee will resolve the issue so I don't think it's worth the trouble.

She wants a laptop for her birthday anyway, so she'll be using that & my sons not into Bingo just yet  :)

Thanks again... I appreciate your help.
