    A few problems...
    « on: February 24, 2008, 02:25:31 PM »
Ok, first, I have a folder on my desktop that I keep a LOT of stuff in, like 3.33GBs of stuff in. Well, everything was going good until a day or two ago, I was going to open a picture in windows picture and fax viewer (the default picture viewer) and it takes FOREVER for it to load the picture! but if i put that picture just straight on my desktop, it loads quickly. And also, my computer's fan has been acting weird lately, it's really loud now and it'll go crazy when I just use the scroll wheel on my mouse. What can I do to fix these things?

Is thumbnail View turned on in Explorer? ?
    If so turn it off.
As to the fan issue you will need to replace it most likely.
Remove a side panel to determine which one it is.
Carefully remove it and bring it with you to a Computer store in your area to match it up with a replacement.

As always when working inside the case make sure all power is removed and take anti-static precautions.

I don't have the thumbnail view on, and it doesn't do that in any of the subfolders in that folder. And thanks for the info on the fan.

Well there's a reason it's logging the entire directory instead of only the file you are accessing...
Is Fast User Switching enabled ? ?
What type of backup software do you run ? ?

How do I check if fast user switching is enabled? and what do you mean by 'backup' software?

        From the Mothership:

        Quote
Enable or Disable Fast User Switching
Note: To enable Fast User Switching, you must also enable the Use the Welcome screen option. This feature cannot be used if your computer is a member of a domain. To enable Fast User Switching:
        1.   Log on to the computer as an administrator.
        2.   Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
        3.   Click Change the way users log on or off.
        4.   If it is not already selected, click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.

NOTE: The Use Fast User Switching check box is unavailable until you click to select the Use the Welcome screen check box.
        5.   Click to select the Use Fast User Switching check box, and then click Apply Options. Quit the User Accounts tool.

If you don't know about backup software chances are you have none...i highly recommend Acronis True Image.

Turn it off and see if access times improve...
There are many types of backup software. I use and recommend Acronis True Image...basically it takes a snapshot of your entire system known as an image.
When things go South as they are known to do you simply restore the image and your system is back to the point when the last image was created...
Beats the heck out of a re-install of Windows and all your programs and data...
