Author Topic: Images not showing up on a some websites (mainly Facebook) (Read 22025 times)

Essentially much of my problem is tied to one website, Facebook. However I have experienced periodic problems with other websites over the last week as well...though not as extensive and certainly not as persistent.

For those familiar with Facebook, I cannot view my friends' profile photos (nor my own.) Other images on the website (photo albums, other non-photo graphics) appear with no problem. This has been going on for about a week. Initially I could see a random profile picture or two and my own profile photo would occasionally show up. Then they all turned to the little red X's.

I've tried the following suggestions I've found on the web with no real success:
deleted temp files, deleted cookies, turned off pop-up blocker temporarily, added Facebook as safe website (for pop-ups and cookies), restored IE to original settings, installed latest version of Java. I also downloaded Firefox and has success viewing the site correctly during my first 2 visits, however now no profile photos can be seen using Firefox either. A few days ago, I started seeing some profile photos again (but the majority were still X's.) I was having more widespread internet problems last night and deleted temp files again, but now the few photos that were showing up are entirely gone.

I'm running Vista, using IE 7 and am not that computer savvy (certainly not compared to most of you on here!)

I would truly appreciate any help fixing this problem and thank you all in advance.

What about malware? have you scanned for spyware/viruses?

What anti-virus programs do you use?

I doubt it could be that, but it's worth a shot...

Create a new (temporary) profile in FaceBook and see what happens...this will tell you if it's them or your machine and help narrow things down.

Thanks everyone!!!

I created a new profile in Facebook and still can't see profile photos.

Since my first posting, I've also tried the following: downloaded and tried viewing the site using Opera (didn't work), restored IE settings again (didn't help) and spent 2 hrs in a chat with HP (none of their suggestions worked, however the one thing i haven't done that they said was a last resort was a Startup Repair.)

As for virus/spyware, I have Trend Micro Antivirus with Spyware (last scan was yesterday) and Webroot Spysweeper (last full scan was 8 days ago so I'm running one now.) My problems started about 2 weeks ago.

Go Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove, and...
Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
* Viewpoint Manager
* Viewpoint Media Player
* Viewpoint Toolbar

I assumed it was telling me to follow the directions for the 2nd option where it says "If Startup Repair is a preinstalled recovery option on your computer."

I checked and it says my Windows Firewall is ON.

I went to my programs/features section in control panels. Viewpoint Player was there and I uninstalled it, but no other Viewpoint things were listed. However I went to my Start menu and looked up Viewpoint after and found that Viewpoint Manager has an icon in my Control Panels. BUT, there isn't an option that I can see where I can remove it. When I right click on it, my options are to Open or Create Shortcut. Not sure how to remove it.

My Trend Micro Antivirus also says it's running and all of the recommended settings are selected. Same with my Webroot Spysweeper (and the scan I ran for spyware today came back with nothing.)

Yes....tried Firefox and Opera. Even uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, but no luck.

I was on with HP again today and they had me turn off my firewall temporarily and disable phishing filters on the site as well, but that didn't work either. I also tried changing the resolution on my screen, but no change. They also had me reset my load setup defaults to reset BIOS (whatever that means) after I tried to download some phishing fix they'd suggested I download wouldn't download...I got a message saying the update wasn't for my system. That update is definitely for Vista, so I don't know why it wouldn't update.
Go to Control Panel, and double click on Windows Updates to see if your updates are current.

The only updates I have are optional ones and don't seem relevant to my issue (they have to do with audio, printer, fax, modem, etc...)

Ah....I just looked at my update log and I'd already done this phishing update last year. No wonder why it wouldn't install!

I was hoping this might have been the issue. Oh well.

Today must have been my lucky day....after turning off all antivirus/spyware/pop-up/phishing blocker I had, I tried yet again to log on and lo and behold....there the missing photos were!

I had tried this very same method at least 3 times in the last week, but it never worked. After the photos were back, I then systematically turned on every option I'd just turned off...each time checking to see when the photos would disappear so I could identify the offending program/block, yet the photos never went away. Well beggars can't be choosers, I suppose!

Things are fine on Firefox and Opera as well.

So thank you to all who helped try to unravel this mystery with me (especially you, Broni!)
