if there is a coaxial connector, then you will need to have a cable modem.
from the cable modem out of an rj-45 to the computer...

Not so. No need to even think about cable modems. Read the question again.

Ethernet LAN connectors can be RJ45 (twisted pair) or BNC (RG58  coaxial cable)

The "LAN" part is the RJ45 cable.

With a cable modem, when you are conecting to the internet, you connect an ethernet port on your PC to an ethernet port on the cable modem. Usually an RJ45 cable and connectors are used. This is LAN stuff.

Inside the cable modem the signals to and from the PC's network card are processed and sent to & received from the cable company's system.

Out the back of the cable modem comes a coaxial cable. This is not a "LAN". It is an RF connection to the cable company's equipment.

Also, confusingly, ethernet can use coaxial cable with BNC plugs as well as RJ45 stuff.

So why did you say that if there's a coaxial connector you need a cable modem?

              fpsmitch,

what dias de verano is trying to explain is that there are networks that use just coax cable (10BASE2, 10BASE5 setup). this type of network is obsolete due to the increased speed and cheaper costs  of CAT5 wire.
