    USB Ports not working
    « on: February 28, 2008, 05:58:21 PM »
I reloaded windows XP Pro, upgraded to SP2.  The system runs great, but the usb ports are still not working.  My system is a Dell XPS.  I have 8 usb ports, not active.  everything else seems ok.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you re-install the motherboard drivers ? ?
    A format wipes everything out.

All I have is the Dell disk to reinstall the programs.  Where do I find the drivers?

Go to www.support.dell.com and they should have drivers for your system. Just enter your service tag and it will give you a list of drivers to choose from.

Well, I still stuck.  I downloaded the driver from Dell, installed them, but nothing has changed my USB ports are still listed as working properly but, nothing I plug in registers.  Does this mean I need a new Motherboard or is there anything on the motherboard I can check, Connections? etc.  Kevin

Device manager says they are all working properly.  I checked the bios and they are enabled.  I even disabled them, rebooted then enabled them again.  No difference.  I was on Microsoft's web site and the spoke of a "Hotfix"  I emailed my computers info and they have sent be a  link to d'load the fix.  I hesitate because there are warnings attached.  they have a disclaimer that states "if you would like to confirm whether there are any special compatibility or installation issues associated with this fix, you are encouraged to speak to a Support Professional in Product Support Services."  What is your opinion?

One thing you can try before the fix is do the same thing you did to disable them except this time select "Remove"...you will get a warning message...ignore it.
Do this for every listing both root and hubs.
Re-boot and Windows will re-install them

I have an HP Printer, External DVDRW, Ipod, and a memory card reader.  The card reader lights up and the Ipod charges,  no other reactions.
