          The "C64" Commodore 64 ran on CP/M.  Here's a quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CP/M:

"In 1974 CP/M was a private project of Gary Kildall, under the name 'Control Program/Monitor'. During the conversion of CP/M to a commercial product, trademark registration documents filed in November 1977 gave the product's name as 'Control Program for Microcomputers'."

And: "Many different brands of machines ran CP/M, some notable examples being the Altair, the IMSAI 8080, the Osborne 1 and Kaypro portables, MSX, and even the Apple II when an extra Z80-card was installed. The best selling CP/M capable system of all time was probably the Commodore 128 ..."

Not exactly. By stretching the English language quite a bit, you could shakily claim that the C64 was CP/M capable, but it didn't run that OS natively out of the box. When you turned it on you got Commodore BASIC and that was it. You needed a disk drive and a CP/M licence and a bunch of extra hardware to run CP/M on a C64.

The C64 was based around the 6502 cpu, and CP/M only ran on the 8080 and Z80 cpus. CP/M-86 for 8086 family cpus was a later development but MS-DOS had arrived by then.

So you needed a Z80 cpu in an addon device. The CP/M Cartridge, or Z-80 Cartridge as referenced in the Programmer's Reference, was manufactured in 1983 and was soon withdrawn, because it was slow, buggy and incompatible with anything else. One reason for incompability was that the 1541 [disk drive] was incapable of reading any existing CP/M disk format.

I believe what you say Dias de verano.  I owned a Commodore 64, but I honestly don't recall much about it, other than that I learned a little about programming in BASIC.  And, I did have a 1541 disk drive.  With the money I spent on that system (computer, monitor, disk drive, and printer), I could buy two new low-end desktop computers now.  It was an expensive toy.
