problems installing sp2 after i reformatted my hd.
« on: March 05, 2008, 08:56:06 AM »
I bought my computer in 2003 and it is a dell 8200 laptop.  Yesterday, I decided to reformat my hard drive and reinstall the original windows xp that came with the computer.  Everything work GREAT.. but now windows will not install SERVICE PACK 2.  the error message is windows cannot copy locator.exe, it does this for probably 4 or 5 files.

What should i do? and should i install sp1 then sp2 or should i skip to sp3?

How did you format and re-install ? ?
If you used anything other than the Dell CD that came with the machine it's likely to be missing either drivers and or propietary add-on software  that enables the laptop to update properly.

SP2 includes SP1 so that may be wasting time and energy.
I wouldn't recommend SP3...it's still a BETA and has seperate issues.

Check out the Dell Forums for issues with that model #

Also if you know someone who has an SP2 CD you could try it that way.
Good Luck.
