My windows is broken
« on: March 11, 2008, 05:39:21 AM »
I am running an HP laptop AMD dual core processor and 2 gigs of ram with Windows Vista SP1.

My problem...

The computer was running fine until recently, I think it was one of the updates from Microsoft that did it, either SP1 or another more recent not sure but now I have multiple problems.

The computer won't start up control panel, I have to go to my computer and click on the expand arrow for control panel and open up the individual program from there.  It won't start up windows media center or other random things like Freecell and most annoyingly it won't print.  My printer is connected and "working"  the scan function works but the actual printer won't.

Does anybody know what this might be or how to fix it?

Why have you not updated Windows to SP2?

Why have you not updated Windows to SP2?

SP2 hasn't been released for Vista.

Oops, I didn't read your post carefully enough.

I have a Compaq Presario Notebook with Vista but haven't installed SP1.  Can you uninstall SP1?

Do you have your important files backed up?

All my files are backup up on an external hdd.  I can't uninstall SP1 which is what I was going to try and neither can I go back to a previous restore point because my computer won't open the system restore or show me my installed updates.  Anyone with any advice on how to do this through command prompt or dos?

See, if you have KB936330 update listed. If so, uninstall.
Where did SP1 come from?

I download all my updates straight from Windows Update, also I couldn't find KB936330 though even if I could my computer won't let me uninstall any of the updates.

It's not there. It wasn't released to the public, yet.

I must have got it through the Microsoft website, but I am pretty sure I downloaded it through Windows Update, it is a release candidate version.

Yeah, possible from M$ site, but not through updates. It was a bad idea, but you know by now.
Let me see, if I can find something about uninstall.

Which bit of this

start /w pkgmgr /up: VistaSP1-KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.0.<build number>

Do I type in, and do i have to put in spaces?

I keep getting a syntax error when I press enter.

If it's SP1 RC Preview, "build number" will be 17042

Is your Vista 32-bit?
Build numbers may be wrong, depending on what RC you installed.
Some other number to try, below...

I have SP1 RC 6001.17052

And a 32bit operating system.

I put in the right numbers into the command line, but it still comes back telling me that I have put in an incorrect syntax.  I simply don't know what I am doing wrong.  I typed that lot in one long string, then I tried putting in the first line and pressing enter but that didn't work and I tried it with and without the spaces shown.

Your command should look like this:
start /w pkgmgr /up: VistaSP1-KB936330~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.0.17052
Just copy above line, and paste it into Command Prompt.

I got an error message this time, I realised my mistake from before.  Now I think that my only option is #3 on that website, my issue is that I don't have a vista disk.

You may also try uninstall in Safe Mode.
