Windows Running Slow and Uninstalling Anti-Virus
    « on: March 15, 2008, 11:58:02 AM »
Hi, I have a two part question.

First, my CPU has been running slow, as if it has a virus.

    My specifics:
    -Dell Inspiron 5150
    -Windows XP
    -Symnatec Anti-Virus
    -Super Anti-Spyware
    -AVG Anti-Spyware
    -CCleaner

    My steps:
    -Symnatec run....no virus
    -Super Anti-Spyware......no problems
    -AVG Anti-Spyware........no problems
    -CCleaner...............all emptied

Do you have any idea what the problem could be and how to resolve?

    2)  I have tried to delete Avast...I don't want another anti-virus.
It fails to uninstall.  I removed all the shortcuts...yet on the add/remove programs it still is listed and further when I try to remove it prompts to be installed NOT uninstalled.
    How can I fully remove?

    Thanks.

Running two anti-virus programs will certainly slow down your computer if not freeze it. I would recomment keeping AVG and scrapping the other.

      Hold your horses...
AVG is antispyware AVG, so it doesn't bother anything, but...
You DO have two antiviruses running: Norton, and Avast. One of them has to go.
      BTW, the log is clean.

Also, we need your processor speed, amount of RAM, hard drive size/free space.

        1)  Where do I find processor speed/RAM/free space?

        2)  Which one should I keep, Norton or Avast?

        3)  How do I go about deleting?

        Thanks.

Double click on my computer, right click on your C drive to see the size of your HDD and amount of free space left. Right click on My computer and select properties to see you processor speed and amount of RAM. As for which anti-virus to use. It's totally up to you but Avast and AVG are free. You can get rid of one of them by going to control panel, selecting add/remove programs and select the one you want to uninstall.

If you'll decide to get rid of Norton, which is really bad news, you'll want to use Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

I would like to remove Advast, but this is causing problems.
I go to add/remove....click on the Avast link.
Instead of being able to remove I am told installing Avast will conflict with another anti-virus program running.
This makes it like I do not have Avast installed...yet when I start my computer it automatically is running and updating.

          What is going on?
Why can I not delete and what can I do...thanks.

Normally, in case like this, you should reinstall program, and then its uninstal would probably work, but I don't recommend it here, because we don't want to have any conflict with Norton.
We'll have to remove it manually.
I have to go out for couple of hours, so, I'll post further instructions when I'll get back.

          Go Start>Run, type in:
          services.msc
          Click OK.

          Services window will open.

          Find following services:
          - avast! iAVS4 Control Service
          - avast! Antivirus
          - avast! Mail Scanner
          - avast! Web Scanner

In each case, perform very same action...
          1. Right click on a service, click Stop.
          2. Wait until service is listed as Stopped
          3. Right click again, click Properties, and under Startup type select Disable from drop-down menu.
          Disregard any Windows warnings

When done, restart computer, and restart computer.
You may see error message(s). Don't worry about them, but let me know, if any were present.

          Post fresh HJT log.

            Thanks.
I followed the steps...when I restarted the CPU I still was told Avast AV Incompatabile software running.

Has Avast been deleted....if not then what can I do to make it removed?

when I restarted the CPU I still was told Avast AV Incompatabile software running.
            We're only partially done.
Open HJT, put checkmark next to:
            - O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe
            Click "Fix checked".

Restart computer in Safe Mode, and delete a whole folder ALWILSOFTWARE from C:\Program Files

            Restart in Normal Mode.

Let me know, if any errors are reported.

              Thanks.
I went ahead and did both steps.

When I was in Safe Mode...I tried deleting ALWILSoftware.
              However...as I was attempting...it failed.
              I was told

Cannot delete ashshell.dll (or something to those about...I might have misspelled).
              Access denied.
Make sure disc is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Nonetheless...upon rebooting the CPU into normal mood I was not promoted that Avast was running...which prior to taking your suggestions I was.

Any clue as to what is happening?

Yes. Some Avast! files must be loading is Safe Mode, already.
It's not crucial, because Avast! doesn't seem to be running anymore, but I'd like to have your computer clean.
              Download, and install Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
It'll install as an option in your right click menu.
Right click on ashDisp.exe file, and click Unlocker. It'll attempt to delete the file, and it won't be able to, but it'll give you an option to delete the file on reboot.
Select that option, and restart computer.
Go back to C:\PROGRAM FILES\ALWILSOFTWARE\Avast4 directory, and by now, ashDisp.exe file should be gone.
Attempt to remove ALWILSOFTWARE folder again.
If it won't let you, use Unlocker again to delete the above folder on reboot.

                I followed your steps

                1)  I could not find ashDISP.exe.
                            -I tried searching

I did install unlocker....and in program files....unlocked and deleted ALWILSOFTWARE.
                     It no longer appears.
Does this mean I am finished?
                     Is it removed?

                2)  Should I get rid of unlocker?

                3)  Is there anything else to do...or am in good health and just follow the guidelines?
Would you like logs to confirm?

                Thanks!

You may want to keep Unlocker. It's a very handy tool.

Post another HJT log, so I can see, if everything is gone.

                      HJT log is clean.

                      1. Turn off System Restore:

                      - Windows XP:
                         1. Click Start.
                         2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
                         3. Click the System Restore tab.
                         4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
                         5. Click Apply.
                         6.  When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
                         7. Click OK.
                      - Windows Vista:
                         1. Click Start.
                         2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
                         3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
                         4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
                         5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
                         6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
                         7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
                         8. Click OK

                      2. Restart computer.

                      3. Turn System Restore on. Create new Restore Point.

                      4. Download, and install CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds. Get "Slim" version.
Read CCleaner instruction here: http://www.jahewi.nl/ccleaner/ccleaner.html, and run CCleaner

                      6. Download, and install free ThreatFire: http://www.threatfire.com/, which will give you real-time protection against malwares.
It won't interfere with your antivirus, nor firewall.

                      7. Let me know, how your computer is doing.

                      P. S. I partially answered your questions above, then...
                      - I'd definitely add another 512MB stick of RAM
                      - Some extra entries showed up only in cache entry, and some old downloaded files; sometimes, it takes couple of runs to remove everything
                      - CCleaner, 21.82KB left - I'd need to know what kind of files are those leftovers; possibly some temporary files, being in use

                        1) System Restore was ALREADY TURNED OFF.
-I simply turned it back on

                        -What does this indicate?
-Did I do the right thing?
                        -What is the next step?

                        2) I'm confused with CCleaner...why install it when I already have it?
-How can I post details of the scans/what was cleared and what remains?

                        3) Downloaded threatfire
-What do I do with the program?

                        4) I have windows unlocker...can I delete?

                        5) Computer has been running slower since I downloaded threatfire.

                        Thanks.

                        1. You did right thing. Nothing else to do in this department.
                        2. Sinnce you have it, already, run CCleaner, using instruction from the manual to which I provided the link. No need to post anything.
                        3. ThreatFire - you just install it, and let it run.
                        4. You can, but it's a very tiny program, which you can need in the future. I'd keep it.
                        5. Perform step 2, first.

                          Alright

                          1) I configuered and ran CCleaner according to the guidelines posted here

                          -Is that ok?

                          2) I ran the CCleaner...the log is a pain in the *censored* to post.

It's doing better...is it all clean...no viruses or bad programs?

Should I run one last scan or is it good to run?

Keep your protection programs up, and up to date. That's all, you can do.
