i only can play this movie with VLC player?why?

Ok, we just download a movie, we only can run the movie only if using VLC Player.Why?
If i try with another player (divx, windows media player, power dvd, real one) it will prompt the player cannot open this type of file.
I already have avi codec before this.
My question is, why only the VLC can run it?
I can't see any file extension in this file....is there another way to know the file extension?

try this to knw the xtenion of the file .
go  to cmd then go to that particular directory whr that file is placed n write "dir *.*"
it will display all files with xtensions.
chk it out  n reply.

windows xp service pac2, yeah i thought it was all about codec, and that's why i'm trying to know the file extentions.

Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View, make sure, "Hide extensions for known file types is NOT "ticked".

yup, it is .avi but i wonder why do i need vlc player to run it, i already have ac3 codec and avi codec even divx player
