I am running WinXP Home SP2

Just a little thing that keeps bugging me, last time I turned my computer on I couldn't access desktop properties, (e.g. right click on the desktop and select properties) I got a Message Box saying something like "C:\Windows\Shell32 Memory access error"

I rebooted and I got a message saying "For security reasons Rundll32 has been terminated" and then 3 messageboxes saying "Rundll32 has encounted a problem and needs to close".

I went to start|run and typed rundll32 and it started fine ( i checked with task manager) and it worked fine until I tried to open an unknown file type I got the same error. I went to start|run and typed rundll32 a second time and this fixed it, but why did I get the error? I have Mamutu Background Guard running all the time, and usually AVG free (for viruses) and always Windows Defender and Windows Firewall.

that does sound weird? maybe reinstall your graphics card driver?

AVG misses a lot of viruses. I've tried it and can tell you that a lot of crap gets through that the free edition does not recognize. It is worth it to spend forty bucks or so on something better.

I disagree with this statement....in the 5 + years i've been using it i've never had that happen.

Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK. Have XP CD handy.

And whenever it does happen two other things I didn't notice happen aswell: My start menu (when I click all programs) freezes, and when I click shutdown I am presented with a window with a drop-box with all my options in it (so not windows xp box) is this normal in any way???

Ok, I rebooted, and all worked fine for a while, then when I clicked Safely Remove Hardware i got:

Deciding this was the same problem, I took a screenshot and tried to open paint, this was what I got:

(Taking screenshots became difficult after that but I managed it) No matter what I tried i couldn't open paint. Then I just went round trying to work out all the different symptoms. Opening the Volume control got me

and that was odd, seeing as Windows Media Player was running and I was getting music out.

The power meter and wireless network assistant worked, then I opened notepad and was presented with a windows 98 style notepad:

Can we please for a moment stop the discussion of the merits of avg and please for a minute focus on the fact it doesn't relly matter, i have windows firewall and mamutu as well.

Sorry to sound rude, just a teeny bit annoying thats all.

This may very well be your issue....

At command prompt, type in:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

I did the regsvr32 /i shell32.dll and I got a message box telling me it worked, now I've rebooted my computer, and I don't know if anything special is supposed to happen or not, but nothing happened anyway. Safely Remove Hardware etc is working, but it was only sporadically not working anyway.

I have done sfc /scannow, which returned nothing, and regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, which returned a little message box saying "successfull operation" or something along the lines of that.

It does not appear to hae the problem anymore, but i said that last time, and it came back.

You advised me to uninstall Mamutu, which I have not done, do I still need to uninstall it?
