http://computer.howstuffworks.com/ is one good source.  If you're near a library, find out whether they have this book: http://www.howcomputerswork.net/  Even if it's an older edition, you can still learn a lot from it; just keep in mind technology marches forward at a rapid pace, so some of what you read in older edition may be obsolete.
