Serial ATA being recognized as IDE HDD
« on: March 22, 2008, 09:45:15 AM »
Hi. I have a Samsung R60 + laptop, unmodified. It came with a 160gb S-ATA HDD, but it would appear that the laptop is only recognising it as a IDE HDD. This hasn't been a problem so far, but i have just tried to install iATKOS, which requires a S-ATA HDD and it cannot see the partition the i have created for it at all.
i looked into my bios to see if i could find any info, and i looked at the boot sequence, and i have:
1 - IDE CD/DVD
2 - IDE HDD
etc
etc.
Now, ive taken off the bottom panel and looked at the HDD and it clearly states that it is a S-ATA drive and the connections back that up.
This is really doing my head in now. All help will be appreciated. If you need anymore information on the laptop, i will try to find out as much as i can.
Thank you,
Luke

ps.
here is a picture of my HDD - if it's any help...

look in your BIOS again, there should be an option somewhere along the lines of "recognize SATA HD's as IDE".

This is still puzzling as the bootmgr has nothing to do with how it recognises a hard drive installed in the system.

the bootmgr was a new symptom, but thats resolved now. still the burning issue of the IDE/S-ATA confusion. i read somewhere else that there is a thing called 'IDE emulation' that manufacturers are incorporation these days. any thoughts on the matter?

There is no hash in SATA...S-ATA is redundant.
IDE emulation would depend on how old this system is...
