Is there a free program that can check if my windows XP is free of bad/corrupt files? I have xp, 3g ram, Pentium D 2.79gz, ...so my machine is fine technically, but seems when I open most things in My Documents explorer crashes and has to restart.   ???

I have had similar problems and have had good luck with Defrag and chkdsk.

Open Run and type sfc /scannow and hit enter.
This will check your system files. You will need your XP install disc.
