I'm tired of this... all assistance appreciated!
    « on: April 04, 2008, 08:22:41 PM »
Hey all, for a very long time, my internet connection is very confusing, and slow... I have Comcast internet service and a motorola black SURFboard SB5120 modem.  My D-Link box is a DI-624 wirless 108G Router with 1 antenna.  The router is connected to the modem, and the modem is connected to computer 1.  Computer 2 and Computer 3 are in different rooms, not very far from the router and have D-Link internet cards that were bought with the router.  I also have a laptop connected the the wireless network.  If the computers are very close to the router, they have perfect connection, but anywhere else have decent to low connection.  Computer 3 is literally three feet from the router, only separated by a wall.  The internet is rarely "blazing fast" like comcast says, but is always enough to do some internet browsing and maybe stream video.  I realize this isn't much of a problem when just browsing, however when I try to play a game on a computer, such as WoW, I always end up going linkdead.  Even when I directly plug my laptop into the router, I get disconnected.   I realize four computers on a network isn't really that many and this is why I'm so frustrated, as many of my friends have more computers on a network and have absolutely no problems.  It's really frustrating for me because I can't play any types of games... I don't understand why it's this way... this has also been going on when I had my old network stuff.  The main computer is from HP and is about 5 years old.  I was beginning to think it's a problem with the main computer because it's old and slow and could have a lot of viruses on it.  I scanned with a lot of programs and found nothing big.  If anymore information is needed I would love to give it, just ask.  Thanks a ton guys.

I don't know, if it's a typo,  but normally, you connect computer to the router, and router to the modem.

In my opinion, you need a new router.

Any known brand will do: D-link, Netgear, Linksys, Belkin.

I have good luck with tigerdirect.com  You can try them for a router.

here is a wireless N that is a little cheaper.

Hey, avoid wireless N or super G routers. They are not standardized. Stick with 802.11 G routers only.
Try with an alternative operating system and see how it works (Ubuntu, Knoppix).
If you get disconnections while using wires to connect to the router, the problem may be behind your router, to ISP equipment or ISP. If you connect a computer directly to ISP modem (the Motorola), do you have any of the problems you mention?

i bought a Netgear RangeMax Next Wireless-N Gigabit Router, and the problem continues... I'm thinking it might be the modem now?  Any more help is awesome, thanks.

I ran a ping test in the command prompt on the main computer using ping -t www.google.com and found that I didn't get a reply and my LAN computers lagged at that time... so does this mean it's the modem?
