Car stereo - CD player that also plays .mp3 files
« on: April 08, 2008, 12:21:23 PM »
I have a friend whose new car has a built in CD player.   It will also accept and play  CDs with .mp3 files saved on them as data.

I was organizing some .mp3 files to burn to CD,  and now I have a question.

Do these players require all the files to be in the root directory?

In other words,  if I organized and grouped the files into sub-directories,  would the player be able to find them?

Thanks

It depends on how advanced the player is...
Basic players will probably not be able to see files anywhere but in the root directory.
But I've seen players that can navigate folders as well.

All I know is that it is a brand new Ford.   A couple months old.

Fair enough.   I guess the safest thing to do is burn them all in the root dir then.

Probably be upwards of 150 files.    In your experience there is no problem with that....  players will just go through them all?

    Thanks

      It should work just fine.
Considering the price of blank CDs you could burn a copy with music in folders as well, just to see if the player will read them.

Nice, Wally -- too bad it's not the good ol' days when America Online sent out all those introductory floppy disks which we used to reformat and reuse... ;)

I assume that you can just burn the mp3 files directly as 'files' to the cd and it should play (and most likely you don't need to worry about special directories)

Yeah but now it's all those USB flash drives filled with erasable adverts that get erased within 1 second of the drive being received in the mailbox!

Ooh, I am like, so jealous -- I haven't gotten anything like that!  Even better than a floppy drive!!!  Good for you!!

Worry? ...      no, it's not like that.   :)

I was wanting to know if I had the option,  in case I wanted to use sub-directories,  for my own reasons.    Grouping, organization.... whatever.
        With me now?

Sure, we're with you -- we just follow the squeaking...   ;)

I'd rather stay with the clicking instead of the squeaking :-) Just a little less frisky imo.
