    Very Slow Bootup.
    « on: April 09, 2008, 11:20:35 AM »
    Hi,
I started in the Virus section but after getting a clean bill of health from Evilfantasy I am now trying to solve my problem which is a very slow startup, 8 mins,
I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue but I have defragmented the HDD and reduced the startup progs to a minimum but it still takes over 8 mins to finish of boot sequence. My computer is a pentium4 2.8ghz with 2gb ddr. The computer was working fine only a couple of weeks ago but then all of a sudden it slowed dramatically. I also use Skype a lot but found it impossible as the conversation sounded as if it was underwater.
The light on the HDD is bright all of the time of bootup with no flickering, as if it was doing some other task while starting up. I have an ATI Graphics card with twin screens.
Is there perhaps a program that records what is going on during the boot process.

    Hope someone can help,

    Regards,

    dave

Download and run HijackThis (search for it with Google) and record a log, and perhaps post the log here. Someone with knowledge might be able to indicate which items to tick for check fix. Then run again...

Will it load faster in Safe Mode?

        Hi Broni,
Just timed the 2 boots. In safe mode - less than 3 mins, Normal nearly 8 mins. Both times were taken until the HDD light settled down. I did also notice that I didn't have internet access in safe mode and no icons on the task bar.

        Regards,

        Dave

Usually anything on the right side of your taskbar that has to load during windows booting will slow it down.  As well as maleware an spyware.
Windows 7 RC Tester.  Working on it.  Your monitor says etchasketch on the side!

            Hi Sqall,
As I said in my 1st post I got a clean bill of health from the virus/anti spyware team and the startup programs have been greatly reduced from the time the computer was functioning normally.

2 posters already have given him advice on malware....

He clearly states in his FIRST post he has already been given a clean bill of health from Evil Fantasy.

From the specs you have given your machine should be running good.

You said it started a few weeks ago? What happened if anything back than? Does the machine run good after its done booting or is it still slow?

When was the last time you had the case open to check and see if your fans are running good?

Hi Can't exactly pinpoint when he problem started. About 3weeks ago I had a new hard drive fitted and I cloned it with Acronis from a backup I had. The computer was running great until about a week ago when this problem arose. I cleaned all of the case and all of the fans are running OK. The computer is slow after boot while it loads the first program but once loaded it works normally, this applies to excel, firefox or whatever prog. It seems as though during boot that the computer is doing other tasks in the background hence the reason for asking if anyone knows of a program that will monitor the boot sequence and issue a log.

The backup was of a hard drive in your current machine? Maybe you have a bad image of the backup. Have you tried to reload the machine?

                  Hi,
Yes it was a clone of my working drive which I disconnect until I want to do a backup. My computer was working fine all the time until the origional C drive started playing up. If what you are suggesting were true then it would have shown up from day 1 not a few weeks later.

Have you got the xp disk?

You may want to run disk checker

but yeah starting with one stick of ram at a time and putting one in each time u resart is a good idea.

If it boots up ok with 1 stick then u have faulty ram. which will definatley be slowing your machine.

PLEASE TURN OF YOUR POWER AND EARTH URSELF BY TOUCHING UR CASE B4 U GO FIDDLING INSIDE...
