    server not found- mozilla firefox
    « on: April 11, 2008, 01:30:32 PM »
ok, here's the problem,.. each time i try to connect to the internet using mozilla firefox i'm getting "server not found"..i tried to ping www.yahoo.com, and i got "ping request could not find host".
there are some instances that i will be connected , but after few minutes, the connection will be lost again..
i called my isp, and they told me that my o.s. is corrupted.. so they instructed me to reformat my computer..
and after reformatting, i'm still having the same issue..i even tried to unplug then plug again the power cord of the modem... but still the same issue..
can anyone help my please..... :'(

try getting a hold of a new modem. and test again.

if you have dsl, it might be that there is no problem with connection provided by ISP but that your dsl has malfunctioned, which happened to me and the tech guy brought me a new working modem and installed it for me the next day after I called.

And no i do not think your o.s. was corrupt in the first place since the problem still exist.

No problem. I would definitely insist that the ISP send a tech guy to your house to help you with the problem if they're just gonna give you the "O.S. is corrupted" B.S.

I bet the ISP is just trying to blame other reasons for the problem that your connection isn't working instead of just admitting that they are at fault and by doing so, hopefully they can get the problem fixed before you even realize that you had no problem at your end.

Since ping doesn't work, you definitely have no connection.
Any router involved? Is it wireless, or hardwired connection?
Did you try to unplug router/modem for 1 minute?

Hmm sounds like thers no connection between your router and the internet, not the internet and the computer.
With your router plugged in and fully set up,
Click start > control panel > Classic view if not already > network connections.
Find your local area connection the modem is connected to (should only have one) and right click it and click Status.
Then select the support tab,and note down what your default gateway is.
go into your browser of choice, and type http://"default gateway here" (without quotes)
So for instance mine looks like http://192.168.1.2
and then you should be met with a login page, if you can get there, there is nothing wrong on the connection between the router and computer. if you know your username/password go ahead and login and see if it tells you its connected to the internet. if not...try "admin" in both boxes without quotes, or admin for your username and password for your password...if that doesnt work try find the manual for your router to tell you what the default ones are.

However if you dont even make it there...then something really wierd is goin on so goodluck!

for the modem i use the "internet" light should always be on and I think most dsl modems have that unless OP is using the cable modem.

Kurtiskain, how do you know techhunter is using a router? he never said so.

elxr06: "i even tried to unplug then plug again the power cord of the modem..." Which means he has a DSL modem, which all have a built in router :) because it is the 'middle man' between the computer and the internet, with its own IP address and it then re-routes the connection to the specific computer.

For me i have a single ADSL light which is solid for conection, and i light labeled RxD which blinks when active...Still elxr06 could be right...do you have a DSL modem or cable modem? I think its safe to say its not internal :)

All modems DO NOT have a built in router...
Let's wait and see what the ISP comes up with.
