    Display problems.
    « on: April 21, 2008, 11:37:38 AM »
Yesterday, the display on my computer monitor has been screwing up.  I see vertical lines of distortion across the screen, color issues, and redraw problems (I think that's what it's called).

At first I thought this occurred because I updated the drivers on my video card, so I did a rollback on the drivers, but it still has display problems.  I'm pretty sure it's my video card.  I've also been getting this blue screen error, something about "physical memory dumping" or something.  ???

Can anyone identify the problem and provide a solution?

    Computer specs:
    Dell Dimension 4600
    Windows XP
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
    1.5 GB RAM
    Pentium 4 3.0 ghz processor

    Thanks in advance.

Factory Dell PSU in that machine ? ?
Checked to see all fans are running properly and you're not overrun with dust bunnies inside the case ? ?
When you did the rollback did you let Windows handle it ? ? Doesn't always work well in some cases.
Check for instances of the newer driver and un-install them and re-boot.
Sometimes you have to actuallt remove both and re-boot and re-install the originals......

I opened up the case to check the video card fan and it seems to be functioning. The weird thing is, the graphics are perfect now with the case off. But, I am noticing a weird noise coming from the computer. It sounds like a high-pitched, chirping sound (like a bird). Now that I think about it, this sound surfaced when I began having these display problems. What does the sound mean? And why are the graphics fine when I have the case off (it is off as I type)?

I haven't added any new hardware to the system except 1 GB RAM to the existing 512 MB.

Download RightMark CPU Clock Utility: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/RightMark-CPU-Clock-Utility.shtml
Check your computer temps with open case.
Close the case, run computer for 30 minutes, or so, and check temps again.

How old is the monitor?  Is it possible you're overdriving the monitor?  What is your screen resolution, color depth, and refresh rate?

To determine the chirping sound stop each fan....BUT ONLY for a few seconds using very light finger pressure.
Your CPU and or the GPU fan probably need replaced.
Remove the culprit carefully, paying attention to the plug orientation and take them with you to your local PC store to match them up...
