You've been around long enough to know we need more info.....
what kind of drive (sata or ide)?
what kind of connection (usb 1 or 2, firewire, esata)?
    how big is the drive?
how is it formatted (fat or ntfs)?
    what OS?

IDE drive via USB?  I would set it to master, or see if it has a setting for only drive.  I'm not saying this right, so I apologize.  Some drives have a jumper setting to choose if it is not going to be in a master / slave setup.

I believe Western Digital IDE hard drives use "Master", "Slave", or "Single" jumper setting.  Hmmm...  He'd have to check the model number.  It's possible "no jumper" might represent one of those modes.

Did you try setting the jumper as "master" or "single" yet? That sounds to me like it is most likely your problem. That or the drive is old/dead. That model of drive was first manufactured around 2000 or 2001. Not sure when they quit making them, but that drive has to be at least 5 or 6 years old.

It wasn't a definitive answer, saying "I think so" means you think you did but you may not have. I was just asking for clarity.

Anyway, you seem to have gotten done whatever you needed to get done.
