Windows XP pro dislikes phone Modems...
« on: May 02, 2008, 05:26:42 AM »
My computer is P4 HT 2.8ghz, 780mb RAM, 40+40GB HDD, GForce5200 AGP, CD-rom, FDD, PM800M2 mobo, etc. I'm using broadband with external ADSL device with LAN.

It is multiboot with XP pro (SP2) and win2k (SP4).

I've an internal phone modem 'Motorola SM56', which cannot be installed in XP, whereas it works normal in win2k.

In XP, windows detects the hardware and searches for driver, which is it locates automatically. When copying of driver files is almost complete, error pops up saying "Windows was unable to install the modem", press OK or cancel.

After that, another message is displayed: "Cannot install this Hardware. The specified service does not exist as an installed service".

So the SM56 modem remains inoperative and with a yellow mark in the device manager. No such error in other operating system win2000pro, where this modem works perfect.

I've tried with several other drivers from the web, but they all fail. I'm sure, I've the correct drivers. Even tried changing modem to another PCI slot. The phone modem works well on another PC having XP pro.

Another symptom, perhaps not related. When I install the software for my Bluetooth Dongle 'BlueSoleil', it progress well until it shows, 'installing Bluetooth Modem' and a warning shows: "No Modem is installed". The installation process ends without completing.

It appears the installations of modems fail due to missing installed service.
Please advice, how to install the service?

Letting XP handle installing the proper drivers is not always the most reliable method...
This applies to all ver. of Windows not just XP.

Here is  the DLoad page for your modem driver.
DLoad it to the desktop or another folder.
Remove the modem in Device Manager by right clicking it and selecting uninstall...
Power down and re-boot.
When the New Hardware window opens simply point it to the driver you grabbed instead of letting it use the Windows one and select install...
The modem should work fine now.

As to the Bluetooth issues the modem issue may not be related. The Bluetooth drivers should be on the MBoard driver CD that shipped with the machine...if you don't have one visit the MBoard manuf. site and DLoad and re-install them....
Good Luck and let us know.

Thanks Potio.

Manually pointing the driver during installation was tried out before also, without any success.

Anyway, fetched the driver from the suggested Motorola website and unzipped it.

Uninstalled the modem from Device manager and from Add/remove programs. Rebooted. Windows detected hardware 'PCI Simple Communication Comtroller'. In the Wizard, selected Advanced Option (install from a list or specified location). A message: Confirm File Replace: the target file exists and is newer than the souce. Selected to overwrite it. When copying of driver files is almost complete, an error: "An error occured during installation of the device. The specified service does not exist as an installed service". Click Finish to close the wizard.

I've a feeling that there is no problem with hardware or its driver. Installation procedure is also correct. Its the specified service, which does not exist. How to enable the service?

Go to Start/Run and type in services.msc and hit Enter...
If there is a listing for PCI simple comm. device right clik it and select enable or automatic....
Then repeat the above procedure.

I'm still thinking your motherboard drivers are not installed correctly or possibly corrupt.
If the above does not work go to Start/Run and this time type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Re-boot when it finishes and try again.

Go to Start/Run and type in services.msc

Ran services.msc. The PCI simple comm device is not found in the list.

Ran sfc /scannow. Took very long time to complete the scan, with XP CD in the drive.

I'll reboot and try services.msc again and post the results tomorrow.

Good night

I'll reboot and try services.msc again and post the results tomorrow.

Further to my reply #4, rebooted the computer and checked the services (local) list. Still PCI Simple Comm device is not found in the list.

Also tried to install the SM56 modem and it failed with the same error:

"An error occured during installation of the device. The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

Something else to try?

Tough room...   ;)

How old is the modem?

Is Win XP one of the operating systems for which the modem was made?

I'm easy like a Sunday Morning, Dias.

OK, Aegis:
Its about 5 years old. Can't say, if it is compatible with XP. Its working fine in Win200Pro from another partition in my computer.

I've tested it in XP on another computer and no problems there.

Well, if it worked in another XP system, it should work in this one, one would think...that's interesting.

In Windows 98 (you can stop laughing now), you need to have the "Dial-up Networking" component from the "Communications" grouping installed.  This would be done from Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup tab, Communications.

Is it possible that Windows XP has a similar capability to add/remove Windows components (possibly from the Window XP CD if setup archives aren't available on the hard drive)?

Have you physically removed the modem ? ?
Or is it onboard ? ?

Did you try re-installing the MBoard drivers ? ?

Yes, I've tried moving the Modem to another PCI slot. It made no change. The modem worked OK in another computer having XP pro operating system.

No, I didn't try reinstalling the mobo drivers yet, because, modem is not part of mobo, but it is fitted in a PCI slot.

I'm concerned about the Error it shows during installation:
An error occured during installation of the device. The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
Perhaps installing/repairing/enabling of Modem service will solve the problem...

Visit  Black Viper's Site  for a comprehensive list of which services should be running in a default install of XP...
    Compare them against your own.

    Physically remove the modem.
Then remove it in Device Manager.
    Re-boot a few times.
Then power down and re-install it and see.

If all else fails the modem may be bad and can be replaced. Personally i prefer external modems myself as they can be re-set much easier.

The list is quite long and will take a while to compare.

    Sorry for the delay...
Visit  Black Viper's Site  for a comprehensive list of which services should be running in a default install of XP...
    Compare them against your own.
Compared the services againest defaults: Following differences.

    Service                                            My PC                Viper's list
    Background ITS                               auto                   manual
    Comp browser                                 manual              auto
    SSDP discovery service                    disabled             manual
Universal plug & play device host      disabled            manual
    windows image acquisition                auto                  manual

I've tried to install the modem by enabling the two above disabled services, with no success. Also tried unistalling and physically removing the modem.

As reported in my first post, the bluetooth modem also cannot be installed, confirming some problem with the XP windows.

If I try to repair XP after booting from CD and choosing repair option, will I loose the win updates?

Did you try re-installing the MBoard drivers ? ?
Also please suggest, which drivers for mobo needs to be reinstalled. There are many devices!

    Any thing else to try?

A Repair install of XP will wipe out the updates to the point of what version the CD is...For example if your CD is XP w SP1 you will have to DLoad all updates after SP1. Same applies for SP2 if your CD is XP w SP2 you will need all updates released after SP2.

Have you visited the MBoard manuf, website for those drivers yet ? ?
Bluetooth and your modem are 2 different things. Although they may use some common Windows services if you have set all those back to the default list it should work.

    Let us know.

P.S. Have you tried another modem yet ? ? They aren't that expensive these days...

I know it is frustrating for the person having the problem, but wow how informative all the posts trying to help.  Patio suggested replacing the modem.  I had somewhat the same problem with comcast and their modem.  After 3 days and mostly sleepless nights replaced modem and problem solved.  Hopefully that will solve yours. ;D

      Regret long delays...

Great idea to try another Modem. I'll swap one from my friend and try that here.

Its difficult to convince someone to borrow the modem, and I got one.

I removed the SM56 after un-installing from device manager and add/remove programs. Fitted this modem and the installation process started normal, but ended with the same error:
An error occurred during installation of the device. The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
This confirms that there is some problem with the operating system and nothing wrong with the modem.

Also, I've reinstalled all the drivers, which are in the mobo CD.

It looks like, the troubleshooting is coming to an dead end. If the problem is not resolved, I might go in for reinstalling the XP.

      Any hope?

      Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru to get familiar with the process and then printing out a copy for reference...
Pay special attention to the Warnings.
If done properly all your Programs and data will be intact.
If done improperly you risk losing everything.

You will then need to DLoad and install all Windows updates that came after whichever Service Pack is included on your XP CD...

This means Windows does not like the unsigned driver from Motorola and is blocking the install of a service needed to run it...
Unsigned driver issues need to be rectified between Microsoft and the hardware vendor themselves.
Again this will all be solved by getting a new modem.

Fully agree Patio, Motorola's driver is unsigned and windows warns while installation process about it and option to continue. It is rather strange the unsigned driver will end up with error: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

My Driver Signing option is set to 'Warn', which is default setting.

In case of the Modem (borrowed from a friend): Compaq Data Fax Modem. There is no issue of unsigned driver and it also failed to install and ended with the same error: The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Have you thoroughly read thru the Repair Install list provided and do you feel confident enough about pursuing that option ? ?
It sounds a bit daunting at first but if you have a good backup strategy beforehand in a worst case scenario you would be looking at a clean install of XP and having to re-install all your programs...
In a best case scenario the Repair Install would retain all your data and apps and hopefully fix the issue...

The other thing i hadn't considered is that are both these modems internal ? ?
      Let me know.

It is multiboot with XP pro (SP2) and win2k (SP4).

I've an internal phone modem 'Motorola SM56', which cannot be installed in XP, whereas it works normal in win2k.

Its working fine in Win200Pro from another partition in my computer.

I've tested it in XP on another computer and no problems there.

If modem works in win2k in the same physical computer (and PCI slot), then there is nothing physically wrong with the modem. Also confirmed by swapping modems as you did on May 22. Also the drivers from: http://www.motorola.com/softmodem/driver.htm (Patio's link, post 2) are good to go for XP (OS Windows Vista/XP/2K/Me/98)

This confirms that there is some problem with the operating system and nothing wrong with the modem.

I agree with you. The modem is OK. The OP is confused! (perhaps corrupted is the proper description, but I like to think of it as confusion.)

Did you try re-installing the MBoard drivers ? ?

Also, I've reinstalled all the drivers, which are in the mobo CD.

It still could be related to the MBoard drivers. The drivers on the CD are old. Download the latest drivers from the MBoard website and update, before the reinstall. Elitegroup PM800-M2]

It looks like, the troubleshooting is coming to an dead end. If the problem is not resolved, I might go in for reinstalling the XP.

That might be the best option at this point. Try the repair install first, if you want. It may very well work, but ...  it may not. From my experience, it is sometimes easier to wipe the slate clean and start over. Windows has a bad habit of not removing all the old registry entries when software or hardware is removed from a system. Sometimes those stray entries can really plague you.

Short of the radical stem of manually editing the registry, or re-installing, have you tried a good registry cleaner. I haven't used one lately, so I don't have one to recommend.

No offense intended but a registry cleaner would be my last suggestion at this point...if there is a needed service that will not install no amount of mucking with the Registry will cure this.

The least painful path at this point is
        A) Repair Install
        B) Purchase a new external modem.
        C) A clean install of the OS.

        Both are internal modems.

This may be off the subject, but why is the screen on this topic sooooooooooooooooo wide?

Some time back I had a topic do this when I had goofed up a quote with a back slash instead of a fwd slash. The previews look OK, but the posts themselves are damaged goods. The problem started somewhere on page 2, as page 1 & 3 are OK if viewed by themselves.

The modem issue may or may not be registry related, but it's certainly not hardware. I still say try the latest motherboard drivers. The original drivers may not be doing the job.

Noting is wrong in Reply # 20. ( My mistake.  :() The problem is in reply #27.
It is caused by the numerous long lines(without spaces) in the log file. You can see it in the following quote. It previews OK if the long lines are broken with spaces, but makes the screen way too wide if unbroken.

OK, the problem of Modem not getting installed is solved. This is what I did:

Used the repair option after booting from XP CD. All went normal, but while installing, restart ended in BSOD.

            Error: SCSIPORT.SYS, address: FT3A6F79, Base at: F739B000, Datestamp: 41107b4b

I was able to get past this by selecting debugging mode and repair completed. But Debugging mode was not very useful and BSOD reappeared little later during booting. It was starting normal in safe mode, in which tried to install Modem and it got installed as normal.

Finally decided to install the XP again after formatting hard drive. This installation was trouble free, no more blue screens, and modem working normal. This also resolved the Bluetooth modem issue.

Thanks for the help guys :)

Sorry about the wide screen, which is due to setup log posted in my reply # 20.
