    window mode gone?
    « on: May 10, 2008, 06:40:03 PM »
I remember being able to force programs (games in my case) to run in windowed mode under xp. Now in Vista I can't seem to find this option - even when going to the root exe rather than the shortcut. From memory it was in the compatability setting section.
Has this feature been removed or moved; and if it is moved where to?

    Thanks

Isn't this a game option? I was not aware the operating system could do this?

...adding to hejlik...while playing games, disable aero...right click on your game executable, and select properties. Then go to the compatability tab, and check the box 'Disable Desktop Composition'. That's aero. Now, when you run the game, Vista will switch you to Vista basic, and then execute your game. When you exit the game, aero comes back.

hmm well its not a running problem - the games run fine and its not linked to areo (though thanks for the description  - been wondering what that command was for) - its just that I wanted to run some games (some older ones specifically) in a windowed mode. I know some games off this as a specific mode to select ingame, but many don't. I am sure that I remember having a windowed mode in compatability which could force the game to run in a window as opposed to full screen.

might be that my mind is going though Thanks for the fast responces

Try using Windows XP compatibility mode.
        Try CTRL + ENTER.
If that doesn't work, ad a switch "-w", or "-windowed" in target path.

Keep in mind, that some games won't allow you to play in windowed mode.
