why can i hear sound on some websites but not others?

hi,

many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer help. until a couple days ago, we could hear sound on all websites. suddenly, some websites (including youtube.com and starfall.com) are inaudible, while others remain fine (pbs.org, etc.). any idea what's gone wrong?

fyi, we've already reinstalled the flash software, checked to make sure that quicktime and windows media player both work, etc.

What browser, version? What Windows version?

hi,
i'm using mozilla's firefox 2.0.0.14 and internet explorer's 6.0.2800.1106...same problem with both.
my windows version is xp 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2....service pack 1.) does that help?

My guess is that the sound files on the sites are not the same type and you don't have all the codecs installed on your machine.

Thanks for the advice, Spoiler. It took Dell customer service several hours to reach the same conclusion and fix my machine, but it worked.

You know what the real funny thing is....I am not a big fan of dell workstations! I like there laptops but they started to sell them with only USB connectors for the keyboard and mouse. No PS/2. So what happens if you run into trouble?

ASUS has dropped to 1 PS2 port on their new boards....
Personally i won't buy a board without 2 PS2 connectors period.
If more people did this they would still all have them.
