    computer doesnt startup
    « on: May 22, 2008, 06:49:41 AM »
I have a hp pavilion 532w, and i was gonna put in new memory card so took the card out and checked with the new one and the one i had bought wasnt right. I did not put the new card into the computer. So replaced the original card back in and now my computer keeps beeping.  1 3 3 1  which is 28 autosize dram i think.  Have no clue what that means can someone please help. I do have a new memory card.   ???

I assume you are talking about RAM.

I would check to make sure the old RAM you put back inside is placed the right way and inserted properly.

with all due respect detroitpistons, your advice does not make any sense and will not solve the problem. this is a hardware issue, not a software issue.

Is the RAM stick inserted into the right slot? If it's just one stick, it has to be inserted into the DIMM1 slot. If it's in DIMM2, that could be the issue here. Also, make sure the notch is oriented properly and that it's pressed in there all the way.

Also, always always always make sure you've unplugged the power cord before messing with internal parts. I'm sure you're aware of that, but it does bear repeating. :)

If you need a layout of your motherboard to ensure that you have your RAM placed properly, you can find a diagram here.

What brand of BIOS is it?
The closest beep sequence, I can find, is Phoenix 1-3-3 - bad motherboard.

                hi
yes the ram is in the 1st slot.  And its a phoenix.  On hp i looked up my computer pavilion 532w and typed in beeps under support and in the phoenix its listed as 28 autosize dram.  Have no clue what that means. and post code 28h.  If that helps you at all let me know i have more info about the computer if you need it. Ty

That post code means bad/incorrect RAM, or motherboard problem.
Since you put back original RAM stick, something happened to it. Maybe, you mishandled it (static), or something happened to the motherboard.
You won't find out until you'll get new, correct RAM stick.

hmmm ok.  So if its not the ram then its the motherboard?  Just checking to make sure.  If thats the case i have a hp pavilion 6475Z would the parts from one computer work in the other?  Just wondering about the mother board. If it would be compatible.

I wouldn't jump into motherboard issue, yet. Start with RAM. It's cheap, and easy to replace.

Why can't you just take the incompatible ram that you bought back to the shop and get it swapped for the compatible ram that you need?
When you touch things inside your computer either wear an anti-static wrist band or ground yourself beforehand. Hold the ram by the edges or top and avoid touching the metal part.
