ie6 closed down when download is activated

Running Windows XP Home with IE6 internet explorer, when I go to site and try to download from that site the browser closed down. Any ideas what is wrong and how to fix it? Ojas

OS Windows XP Home Edition, any site that has a file download-Tried to download IE7?

Have you tried running Windows Update?  Check for high-priority updates...IE7 is one of them.

Also...have you tried using another browser, like Firefox?

Yes firefox works fine but not IE6 on doing a SFC /scan it tells me Windows File Protection is activated.
