Looking For Urgent Help (C://Windows/System32/shutdown -s)
    « on: June 04, 2008, 12:54:43 AM »
message detail    So as a joke a friend of mine entered that
    (C://WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/SHUTDOWN -s)
in a notepad, as a .bat
and used it as the target for my firefox shortcut.

Now it wont start. Ive deleted the file, the shortcut, and emptied my bin, however, the computer still will not boot out side of SAFE MODE.

any solution, is it somewhere as an INF?

What happens is after the OS(the windows loading screen before you put in your password) finishes loading, the screen turns blank, and I highly doubt it is a graphics problem. Thanks for your help.

I *think* that's a command to shut down Windows.  He was targeting Firefox?

I couldn't find information on the -s switch at the end of the command, but there's still a lot of places left to look.

Maybe your "friend" isn't as funny as he thinks he is.  Of course, I'm sure he'll have this fixed up in no time for you.

I know the command. -s means system, versus -l (logs you out).

He didnt target firefox, he just used the shortcut so that using the "firefox" shortcut shut the computer down. Also, he said that the file must have put itself somewhere else as weve already deleted the file and shortcut. As to were, we have no idea.

Also, im using a custom built computer, using windows XP.

              Through safe mode, yes.
However it wont start in debug, most recent successful settings, and restoring does nothing, making me believe the file is in the computers system folder somewhere else (maybe the script/batch copied itself?)

If you can tell I know minimal about computers. I can put one together, but I don't know
              much about programming

So have you tried searching for the file in your system using the search facility?

Otherwise try a system restore to a point prior to your friend's visit....

                Good luck    ???

In safe mode do a search for *.bat and scrutinise the results and their respective locations...be careful not to delete anything important.

Then inform your "friend" if he goes near your machine again he'll recieve an attitude adjustment.

In safemode go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
                  Let it finish and re-boot.

If this produces no joy-joy you are probably looking at having to do a repair install.
                  Post back with the results.

                      SHUTDOWN.EXE-12DAD820.pf

at first I thought it was a system file, but when I google it it comes up as a virus. Advice?
