I suspect AVG may be causing problems.
Right click on AVG systray icon, click Exit.

Also, go Start>Run, type in:
services.msc
Click OK.

Find following services:
- AVG8 E-mail Scanner
- AVG8 WatchDog
In each case, right click, click Stop.

Try to uninstall Java, now.

    I posted some info I found from an old forum a few posts back that described the same problem.  Did that make any sense to you

    Try AVG, first.

      i was able to stop the ave email scanner but it would not let me stop the watchdog

      Did you exit AVG from systray, first?

              Another try...
              Create new profile: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151
              Log in there, and try to install from there.

              One more thought....
              Go Start>Run, type in:
              sfc /scannow
              Click OK.
              Have Windows CD ready.
