Windows Media Player = MAJOR lag

To put it short, I check my processes as I run Windows Media Player, and it jumps up to a whopping 200,000 KBs if left. This seems to lag up my computer MAJORLY and I end up having to end the process. Please help me figure out why this is so

Windows XP Pavilion
447 MB of RAM
Windows Media Player Version 11

Any other info?

XP will be more happy with 1GB of RAM.
Try VLC Player.

Has the Media Player 11 always performed poorly?  Or just recently?

EDIT: Whoa, this is weird. I tried playing WMP when I installed VLC and suddenly it works again (In a sense)

I believe, you may have some codecs missing.
