    WIN NT 4.0
    « on: June 06, 2008, 07:50:10 AM »
I'm using an old computer with Win NT 4. Last night, I was trying to see what the top resolution I could use on the monitor. I set the display for the 1600x? resolution. (Sorry I cannot remember the number for y). The monitor I had hooked up (Dell 770e monitor), showed the "Sync out of range" message. I called a friend, and he suggested using the monitor that came with the machine. So I hooked it up, and the display is and all I see is multiple images of the screen with each line of resolution off kilter. It is so bad, that I cannot tell where the mouse button is.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, in Win95, WinME, and WinXP, if you set the resolution too high, doesn't these OS's, reset back to the last good display that I used?? For some reason I remember them doing that. I just read a book that I have, that WinNT 4 cannot go into Safe Mode, like the other OS's can.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

When the machine boots you should see a message that says "use last good configuration" Give that a try and let us know if it works.

        uncleAaron,

I don't know how much experience you have with Windows NT......but Windows NT is VERY VERY sensitive to changes....it's nothing like Windows 2000 of XP..Any changes you make, you need to absolutely make sure that you have the correct driver.....having said that....work around for your problem I guess would be to get a high end CRT monitor (I don't know but I don't think Winnt supports LCD monitor).

        Hope this helps
        Cheers

I was afraid of that.  ::) I guess I'm screwed until I get a new hd for my computer. I was just using this one until then. I guess I should have just left the resolution alone. My mistake.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Have a good weekend.

Do you have any other video cards you could put into the machine? This would cause NT to reset itself to a defalt video settings. It would be like trying to install a new card without the drivers. You could than delete the old drivers and put your card back in and reload the drivers.

I think the OP meant 1600 x 1200. That is outside the range of most inexpensive monitors. I suggest that the OP boots into VGA Mode (no Safe Mode in NT4). There should be a menu at boot time. Once NT is running, select a safer video mode like 1024 x 768.

piaaz, Windows NT supports monitors. It does not know or care if they are LCD or CRT.
