      Brief explanation of torrents:

a .torrent file does not contain the data that you are trying to get. It contains information about the file, and information about what servers you will be downloading from...

In order to open a .torrent file, you need a torrent application. A small lightweight Torrent program called uTorrent is one of the best, in my opinion.

      Download uTorrent here:
      http://utorrent.com/

Once you have downloaded and run uTorrent, you should be able to doubleclick the .torrent file, and it should open. If not, open uTorrent, click File > "Add Torrent" and find the torrent file.

Not all torrents are fast though, some are extremely slow.

You may want to check out the FAQ for uTorrent:
      http://utorrent.com/faq.php

and guides for how to torrent:

Okay, well, let me just take everything I said back...

          (Image from: http://www.law.ed.ac.uk/ahrc/script-ed/images/torrent-figure2.png )
This is a traditional server. (The one in the middle)
A traditional server has one internet connection, and serves up the computers with the requested files through that one connection.
          Cons of this:
Well, one is obvious: You can really overload a connection by doing that.
Say the server has a 100MBPS connection, and you have 400 people downloading one 1GB file off of the server. The server can only provide those 400 people with a 250KBPS connection speed.

          One pro:
If you dont have an overloaded connection, you are 100% sure to be able to serve the file, no matter what.

Its like a waitress in a restaurant. How many customers are there? Can the waitress handle the amount of customers? Is it going to take longer for a waitress to serve 100 customers, as compared to 10? Of course it is.

This is a picture of a torrent "network".

          Whats going on here?
See the server? Its handling something completely different.
See the computers? They are giving information to other computers.

The server is holding a list of computers. Each of those computers has a part of the file you want.

Your computer queries the server for a list of all the computers that have parts of the file you want, and gets the other computers IP addresses in return. Your computer starts getting information from all those other computers, they are passing information to you.

Along with you getting information, your computer will start sending out parts of the file to other people. Its very community based.

          (Source: http://www.technologyevangelist.com/images/torrentbrokenup.gif )

If you could take a torrent file and the data you are getting, and lay it out flat, it would look kind of like this.
The lines on the top bar represent the amount of downloaded data. You are receiving different parts of the file from other computers. One computer might be sending one part, another another part..
It sounds complex, but, once you start using Torrents, it makes sense easily.

          Caution:
Check with your ISP before using torrents heavily.
Some ISP's consider torrents abuse, and will slow down your connection for using Torrents and other P2P like applications. If your ISP is like mine, you might be charged extra for going over a certain bandwidth each month. (Torrents can take up a lot of monthly data transfer, known as bandwidth.)

This is why it's hard to arrest people for downloading stuff like movies and games because you are actually downloading different parts of the file from everywhere in the world.

That's what i've heard, don't know if it's accurate or not.

Personally, I use torrenting for downloading Linux when I need to burn a new updated disc, or get  a different version. I dont really download music (I did get a CD for my mom) or videos through it.

Firewall up, AV up to date. Whatever is downloaded through torrent, has to be scanned with AV, before use.

I use torrents extensively for large files such as game patches and Linux distributions, I find the error checking and (personally) fast download speeds to be very useful, as well as the ability to queue downloads.

Torrents are often used for illegal purposes . . . you're treading on thin ice, squall, check the copyright of this TV show you're downloading . . . I'd be surprised if downloading it is legal . . .

Let me impress once more, illegal downloads, whether through torrents or not, are NOT to be discussed here.

Since torrents are in small bits, even if someone had purposely infected the file, it wouldent work, since other people have clean versions. The entire file would have to be infected (as in, all the computers would have to be sending an infected file), not just bits of it, for it to hurt you in that aspect. Your less likely to get an infected file using Torrents than you are through a regular website downloading something, or through another P2P network.

As for your IP address, if you have ever visited my website before, I have your IP address. If you have ever modified a Wikipedia page, the public can look at your IP Address.

            My IP Address is 66.172.101.250

Its public information anyways. Your IP address can tell this about you:
            Your Internet Service Provider
The Node you are getting your connection off (this can reveal your approximate location, but, its not accurate at all)
Who to contact if you abuse your connection (eg: if you started causing complete havoc on ComputerHope, the administrator could look at your WHOIS information, find the company who manages your internet, and the phone number to call to report you)

Another point about safety (example = UTorrent)

When you're downloading torrents on UTorrent, the program opens ports on your computer. A very experienced user may be able to gain access to your computer via these open ports, but i've never seen this happen to me or my friends. Just something I picked up on my travels.  ::)

When uTorrent is opened, it opens a local port. When its closed, it closes it.

The problem occurs when a port goes to nothing (no program is opened to accept a port)

But, I am not an expert here..

A bigger problem would moreover be if you set up your router to forward a port to your computer. Local software ports usually arent a problem.

So when I download utorrent , I have to to choose the speed for my connection, I'm using broadband .
When I do the test it gives me this

But then Its got a different speed for broadband!!

So do I click on the ones I've marked in red or the ones given for broadband?

Its fine to have an IP address listed. It wont get hacked. I have descent security, and my ports are set up right.

That IP Address hosts my server.

Type www.zylstrablog.co.nr in your internet browser, and press ENTER. Watch what it magically turns into... 66.172.101.250

                      Google's IP address is: 64.233.187.99
Enter 64.233.187.99 into your address bar, press ENTER, and see what happens.

                      ComputerHope.com is 204.228.150.3
Enter that into your address bar, press ENTER, and see what happens.

When you type in an address like www.google.com, the request is sent to a Domain Name Server, and that server sends you the IP Address of the server back. Text addresses just make it easier to remember the actual address.

Its not that I'm tring to illagely do this but it wasnt on youtube an google was only pulling these up.  :(

You're right, it's not illagel at all.  But it's most likely illegal if you're not paying for it.

Hey guys Now all of you have finally convinced me that utorrent is safe and noone is gonna hack me etc , so I'll give it a try, but I don't really have anything to download!!!
I wanted to download that free game called TrackMania , but it was talking hours and hours and more hours to download (here ) then I read this thread and thought I could use utorrent for downloading, So from my understanding till now, utorrent is like a download manger.

Hope it helps or else I'm gonna remove it from my comp today.

I guess you could call it a download manager but it's downloading from different peers(seeders). In other words, a part of your file may be from another computer and another part from another computer.

You just have to do a search for the torrent for the free game.
