problem with diagonal stripe on moniter after reboot from hibernate

Hi,   I havent seen this question, and i've searched.
i have a Compaq Presario desktop/windows xp media center edition 2005/64amd processor 3800+ /200gb hard drive/1024 mb memory/product #SR2017CL.   i put it into hibernate the other evening, when i went back to it, screen had large diagonal stripes going across it.  apparently, it had rebooted on its own.  non responsive, restarted.  it booted windows and said there was a active desktop error and did i want to restart desktop or turn off.
didnt really respond to either command. went into large diagonal stripes.
After restarting a few times, and same problems, i tried a different moniter.  same prob.  large diag stripes across screen and non responsive.   any help would be appreciated.  thanks   ellie

PS  checked the monitor by plugging into other computer and it is fine.  also realized that (after reading many, many forums) maybe unresponsive because of the mouse and keyboard that i am using.  (wireless)  so i couldn't put in safe mode when i restarted. lmao, gonna let me figure this out on my own, huh?  btw, monitor is a HPvs17x , which seemed to be problematic, according to info i acquired reading this site. Keyboard and mouse are both hp.  Ok then i'll bb after i test everything.   i am also receptive to any tips or suggestions

I have an NVIDIA GE FORCE 6150LE.  We reseated it.

have you got updated drivers for your video card installed

um i kind of doubt it , i use automatic updates, which probably dont mean jack as far as the drivers are concerned.   so no, can't recall doing it.

Updating video drivers may be good idea.
Also, get PS/2 keyboard, and see, if same thing happens in Safe Mode.

I did exactly that with the ps/2 keyboard and mouse also.  Reset computer and monitor .  Made it to page with safe mode on it.  picked safe mode.  Screen came up with approx 6 lines on it grouped in 2's and spread out, and being blonde today, didn't write down what they said, just know there was
no error message.  Screen would not budge.  So had to restart.  Now monitor is saying "no input".  I have checked everything inside and outside of comp for loose anything.  its all intact.  i no longer have diagonal lines though,  now my monitor is flashing different full screen colors every 4 or 5 seconds.  so once again i hooked up my monitor to other computer.  It is what i am using now and it is fine, hasnt skipped a beat.  I have other monitor hooked up to my comp now and it is saying,  no input.  So I can't download new drivers.  can't make it that far.  Do you think it would be a good idea to take my hd and put it in other computer as a slave so i could possibly download new drivers onto it.  Or is that even a possibility?  I am
really a newb, already deleted system files awhile back and had to do a toal
recovery with no back up disks.  First thing i did was make back up disks.  So I am still plugging away at this.  and again, thank you.

First, try to remove video card from the computer, and start it. On-board video should kick in, and if it won't, you may need to enable it in BIOS.
We'll go from there.

It looks like your video card is fried.... Have you tried out Bronis instructions?

Yes I have. Didn't do anything.   Either its fried or need new drivers.  I really can't  remember ever down loading new ones for graphics card.  Also, my monitor went from no signal input to standby, with the different colors.  I will never use hibernate again for sure.   So im a curious, how can you burn out
a graphics card like that . too much gaming?  *censored* the Sherwood, lol.

I have and thanks.  My problem is getting thru the boot so i can download
the drivers.  I might just have to suck it up and take it to be repaired.  Good
thing we have a friend who repairs them for a living.  I just like doing things
for myself, if possible.  Thank you all for all your help.  I really appreciate

OK. Did you remove video card, and checked in BIOS, if on-board video is enabled?

I couldnt get into the bios. It is like its stuck in virtual standby.
