Linksys BEFSX41 router not working.
« on: June 14, 2008, 05:19:57 PM »
I am now at home, using DSL connection (AT&T) to connect to internet. I have two computers at home, one is a compaq with windows vista installed that I use now. The other is a dell with windows 2000 installed that my dad uses. And I am just using the router so both computers can access internet at same time.

I have configured all the wirings correctly, following the quick installation manual from Linksys website. However, the two computers can not access internet. However, individual computer connected directly to modem works.

I also can't access http://192.168.1.1, the IP of the router. And I am using a motorola DSL.

Weirdly, I used to be connected using a Siemen DSL and both computers worked fine using the router until the modem "died" and AT&T tech support guys brought me a new DSL and configured it for me upon request.

Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I would suggest you to go and purchase something other than Linksys. My Linksys dropped out of internet
almost daily. even updated firmware did not correct problem. I have a Belkin router now that works great.
Maybe someone else here has a better suggestion ;D

However, individual computer connected directly to modem works.

      Hmmm...this doesn't sound right.

      Just to be sure. :)
I assume that you've got two wired connections:

      a) Ethernet cable connected from DSL modem to "Internet" jack on Linksys.
      b) Ethernet cable from Linksys to Vista computer.
      c) Ethernet cable from Linksys to 2000 computer.
      d) No connection from the modem to EITHER computer.
      e) Power adapter plugged in for Linksys.

Please double-check to see that you've hooked up this way.

EDIT - BTW, to access the router (Linksys), just type "192.168.1.1" (no quotes)  into the browser address bar - NOT http.
EDIT2 - OK - http:// will work; not needed, though!

So what I have one ethernet cable from DSL to the WAN port on linksys router. One ethernet cable from compaq computer to one numbered port on linksys router. And one ethernet cable from dell computer to a different numbered port on linksys router.

This configuration worked with older siemens modem and at that time, both me and my dad can go onto the internet with the two computers simulataneously so that I can do what I want and he can do what he wants online.

Now, I have a newer motorola modem to replace old siemens that died and doing exactly same configuration doesn't work.

But like I said, if I have dell computer connected only to DSL modem OR compaq computer connected to DSL modem, there is no problem.

Got it. From your original post I thought that you somehow had one of the computers hooked up to the modem and the router.

Seems to me, then, that you need to configure the router to work with the modem. Can you access the router yet?

Did you change DSL providers? If so, more than likely you'll need to change your router settings.

Any have any idea what settings I should be changing if any? .. but at this time, I am having problems accessing the settings page at 192.168.1.1.

192.168.1.1 has loaded once on my compaq computer and when rebooting computer, I can't reach it anymore. And I tested the dell computer, it's been there a few times but that's that.

No, I have NOT changed DSL providers ... it's still AT&T. And I have tried resetting the linksys router to factory settings by pressing the reset button on the back of it.

I can't think of any reason that a modem change would require router changes unless your DSL provider or ISP changed; or the new modem is configured differently from the old one.

A long shot but is each of the computers configured to receive an IP address automatically?

Is the DHCP setting turned on for both the router and the modem?

Each computer should be set to receive an IP address automatically.

And how do you check if DHCP settings is turned on for both router and modem?

Or is it because I have service pack 1 installed on vista computer and that is not compatible with the router? But the dell computer doesn't work well with the router either so I don't understand what is going on.

Most likely the DSL is handing out 192.168.1.x addresses and the Router is ALSO handing out 192.168.1.x addresses. Login to the router and change the internal IP to 192.168.2.1 so that the DHCP then hands out 192.168.2.x addresses on the internal LAN. Then reboot your PCs (Or do a release/renew on your IP) and you should be fixed.

192.168.1.254 is to access DSL's settings page and 192.168.1.1 is to access router's settings page.

Now, if I need to change the IP of router to 192.168.2.1 like you said, then how do you do that?

Go to the 192.168.1.1 page, under the LAN settings section you will see that IP address listed, just change it to 192.168.2.1 and hit apply. Everything else will update automatically.

Ok, thanks for that. But I can't ACCESS 192.168.1.1 at all! The browser always gives me error/can't connect message! So how can I change IP if computer can't recognize it?

Unplug the DSL modem from the Router first, then connect to the router via 192.168.1.1 and make the change.

Sorry for the delay in the response. But thank you very much for the help. I resetted modem once more to factory settings by pressing the reset button on back of router.

Then I rebooted and my computer finally recognized the router and I changed the router to 192.168.2.1 IP and rebooted for changes to take effect and it now works as intended.

                Thank you  :)

Can you clarify what you did to resolve your problem?  Did you factory reset the modem, router, or both?
