    Internet related freezing problem
    « on: June 21, 2008, 10:25:55 AM »
hey guys, this is my first post on the forum, so who can, try to help out please

i have had a problem for quite a while now with my computer running XP Pro 32-bit SP2

everytime i connect to the internet through a dialup connection or EVDO dialup connection and then open ANY program that uses the internet, e.g. explorer, firefox, limewire....anything at all like that

the program freezes for quite a while, like 8 minutes+ and then unfreezes and everything works normally after that

u can d/c from the internet and redial once u have done this first internet connection without any freezing happening again....

it just happens the first time u connect to the net after booting

please let me know what might be the problem....
    thanks very much!

Some people can't get, can't afford better connection.
There is nothing illegal about Limewire.

umm....u all are missing the point!! it is not about the connection

when i said dialup, i was referring to 2 things:
      1. The original dialup connection through a MODEM (56 kbps)
      2. The EVDO dialup connection which is 3G wireless connection (730kbps)

and its not about affording a better connection.....there simply is no other connection where i am from....

      so please....any useful contributions?

Did you try to contact ISP?

no....i am sure the freezing does not occur through fault of the ISP

the dialup account and the EVDO are with 2 different ISP's

it's a problem with windows....hence why i posted it in here....

i just want to know...what could be happening when i start a program that wants to access the internet

I don't understand something. Why do you keep two dial-up connections?

          ok...first to begin with....the EVDO, yes it is a dialup...but its hi-speed

secondy, i don't keep 2 dialups, the dialup modem connection (56k) is for the house (over telephone lines) and the 2nd (EVDO) is a connection which my brother has from BP (work), it is a wireless connection, so u can go anywhere with it and get internet....

so see, the 2nd is not mine.....

now what does this have to do with the freeezing?

Is your brother's computer connection OK? Is your computer desktop, hardwired to the modem?

Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
            Restart computer.
            See, if it helped.

Turn off computer. Disconnect modem from power source for 30 seconds.
                Power it back on.
                Restart computer.

                If that doesn't work...

                Go Start>Run, type in:
                cmd
                Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
                ipconfig /flushdns
                ipconfig /registerdns
                ipconfig /release
                ipconfig /renew

                Restart computer.

                If that doesn't work...

                Go Start>Run, type in:
                cmd
                Click OK.

                At Command Prompt, type in:
                netsh int ip reset reset.log
                Hit Enter.
                Type in:
                netsh winsock reset catalog
                Hit Enter.

                Restart computer.

yea, so that didn't work either...

i think u are misunderstanding the problem

It's NOT a problem with the internet connection.......the connections work just fine!

BUT!!! Its Windows that is freezing when it tries to access the internet for the 1st time upon boot!

the internet connection works fine....so flushing the dns etc doesn't help

its gotta be something to do with the system configuration when it asks for data through the internet.....and it has to be windows cuz it applies to ALL programs trying to access the internet

it doesn't matter.....WiFi, ethernet, dialup and EVDO connections all prompt this freezing problem

and yea, its only the 1st time upon boot

Frankly speaking, I've never seen anything like that.
Try running sfc /scannow, or maybe even Windows repair...

Unfortunately, in some cases, it may be the only way.
