    Boot Disk help
    « on: June 23, 2008, 09:24:49 PM »
I am making a win98 Startup Disk so if I ever need it on a win 98 system that does not have the win98 CD I can do some things.

Now I know that if I made a win startup disk from a win98 system these are the files that would be put on the disk.

    Core Operating System Files.
    IO.SYS
Boots the C.P.U in Real Mode.
    MSDOS.SYS
Contains a remark that identifies the disk as a Windows 98 Emergency Boot Disk. The same File on Drive C: contains Boot Settings and System Settings.
    COMMAND.COM
Displays a Command Line and interpets commands entered at the Operating System Prompt.
    DRVSPACE.BIN
    Used for handling Compressed Drives.

    Emergency Boot Disk Files.
    EBD.SYS
Identifies the purpose of the disk.

    M.S. D.O.S Configuration Files.
    CONFIG.SYS
Contains commands called Directives that configure the Operating System and load Device Drivers.
    AUTOEXEC.BAT
Contains commands for customizing your Working Environment.

    Drivers.
    HIMEM.SYS
Give Windows 98 eccess to Extened Memory.
    RAMDRIVE.SYS
Creates a 2. M.B. Virtual Drive in System Memory so you can extract Troubleshooting Utilities from the EBD.CAB File to the Virtual Drive.

This I get but since I do Not have a win98 system to make a Startup Disk with I whent to Bootdisks.com and downloaded there win98 boot disk.

But this is what was on it a lot of files that say
    ASPI2DOS.SYS
    ASPI8DOS.SYS
    APIU2.SYS
    FINDRAMD.SYS
    BTDOSM.SYS
    FDISK.SYS

Now I know that Findramd.sys has something to do with the RAMDRIVE file and I know what that is but what is findramd for????

And all of the others they are not even files that would be put on a startup disk you make your self. Like FDISK that should not even be here should it  it would not be here if you made this your self from a win 98 system.

I just don't understand this can someone explane ware I am getting lost??

Are you sure some of the .SYS files you quoted are not in fact .EXE files such as FDISK.EXE?

    Google brought up this info.

    FINDRAMD.
It is used to determine the drive letter used by a RAMdisk.
One good deed is worth more than a year of good intentions.
