What do you mean by 'bad configuration'?

As long as you have the Windows XP Disc, yes you can install it over 98.

This one comes up saying that there's a bad configuration with windows and I did the spotmau run and it said I needed to re-install windows but I don't have the cd, so I'm trying to see also what cd exactly should I buy at the cheapest rate.

If you don't have an XP disc, that will be a problem.

If you want to reinstall Windows, you will have to purchase a new disc. You might want to look at XP Home edition since Professional edition is about twice as expensive.

However, Linux is a free Operating System. You might want to have a look there.

I tired going with Linux but found it far too confusing.

Check your local Library for an Ubuntu CD...and or a repair shop.
              Lot's of them use it.
Also there are 2 different  CD's a live one where you can just boot to it and run it off the CD and a setup CD that installs it to your HDD...

You can download UBUNTU and burn it to a CD. It's not that complicated. Just burn the file to a CD. Now you have an operating system.
              http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

              Click on "start download"

Now burn the file to a CD.
              Then reboot

when your computer is restarted you will see a message that says to press a certain key to enter setup. Pay attention, as it may flash very quickly You usually press an F-key or esc to enter setup. Once you have entered setup you want to move over to BOOT or BOOT order. You press the plus and minus keys (usually) to move your devices up and down. You want to set your CD (DVD) drive as the first boot device.
Insert your UBUNTU CD into your master CD drive (usually the top drive). Now exit setup and SAVE changes.

Ok.... Just realized a few days ago that I'll be waiting at least a 'month' on the ubuntu cd, and a person here was considerate enough to inform me of a free download. So, I went and downloaded the ubuntu 8.04. Tried this one and got: kernel panic- not syncing:Attempted to kill idle task!- Tried to go to the ubuntu site to see what I may've done wrong, etc.  Read that if I was using an older computer that I should download ubuntu 8.04 alternative. So, I just did that and got the same thing and notice a couple lines before this I read: unknown boot option +0 x 0/ 0x 1e0.---

I tried to do a little research on other people having this problem and read that couple people did and were able to fix the problem with theirs, but I've yet to figure what they did. -- This computer has been wiped out just last week. I did this thinking maybe it would help, since it was given to me in this condition and I have no idea what was on it except for windows '98.

Any help conquering this would be greatly appreciated!

You need to burn the image to a CD and then boot to it.
Make sure you set your CD drve as the first boot device and SAVE changes.

You'll need to move that DLoad to a working machine to properly burn a bootable install CD...

:)  I've already done that. Now i'm trying to get it to download to my other computer and work. Nontheless, I recieved the actual ubuntu  cd in the mail today. I downloaded the alternate just in case that's what I needed and got the same thing about kernel panic. .-----????

Either the RAM and/or the hard drive on that system has issues...
DLoad and run MemTest and the diagnostics from the hard drive manuf. website.

It's one or the other...maybe both.
