wireless internet problems
« on: February 09, 2009, 06:30:55 PM »
Hey everyone,

My wireless internet is being screwy. I have an excellent connection to the router but after a certain amount of time, the internet stops responding, and my connection speed drops dramatically. It only comes back up if I repair the connection and it only stays up for a small amount of time. I need help

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

I've tried most of these already, and so I started messing with my router configuration. I set the wireless broadcast to 40MHz wide and changed the channel to channel 3 or 4 I can't remember which and so far my connection seems to be holding, 54mbps and receiving internet flawlessly. Hopefully this will hold but I don't know as I've changed the channel and broadcast before and that lasted for about a day.
