I need some rescuing! I inadvertantly unplugged my computer earlier and now it does a disk scan, saying something about FAT32, then gives me a rectangle that reads: "Not Optimum Mode Recommended Mode: 1280x1024 60Hz." This rectangle moves around the black screen, giving me no access to anything on the computer. I have tried rebooting, unplugging it again and waiting, turning it off and waiting a good half hour, pressing Esc and all of the F keys (hey, I'm getting desperate).

Thank you thank you and blessings upon you.

Try starting in Safe Mode. Shut down computer, re-start and keep pressing and releasing the F8 key until you get a black screen that offers an option to boot to Safe Mode - choose it.

When in Safe Mode, right-click on an empty space on the desktop>Properties>Settings tab, adjust Screen Resolution to 1280x1024. Shut down and re-start. Windows should start normally.

If you still have problems, post back with more info: http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,33586.0.html.

      Good luck!
