increase the memory of graphics card.
    « on: July 16, 2008, 07:50:00 AM »
i have got 512 MB RAM. 32 MB is used for graphics card(Name:S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR. Chip type:S3 ProSavage DDR. DAC type: S3 SDAC.), i dont have an external memory card. hence i get 480 MB free RAM memory. i want to know if i can allot more memory to the graphics card from the RAM or from the hard disk(like page file)? if it can be done, plz tell me how to do it. i run windows XP(sp2).

This will be done via the BIOS, under settings for IGP, integrated VGA, or similar.
There's little to be gained by doing this however as integrated graphics are just not meant for gaming, no matter how much of your system RAM they use.  You will just have less RAM to run applications if you allocate more to the GPU.

or from the hard disk(like page file)?

      Nope :(

You may want to add more RAM so that you can allocate more memory to the video without taking an overall performance hit.

      Best of luck!

Upgrading the RAM would help performance, I agree.  But the fact remains that those integrated graphics will still not be up to gaming and the extra memory will not help.

OP didn't say that he wants to game.

You're quite correct.  I just assumed that they wanted to game if they want to increase the shared VRAM, I could easily be wrong.

those graphics specs were the exact same as my old desktop machine. If you ask me, it's about time for an upgrade. I couldn't run many games with S3, and the ones i could run did not perform very well.

which game(s) are you planning on running? just out of curiosity. :p

Well, assuming you have a desktop you'll need a dedicated graphics card then - if it's a laptop, you're SOL.

if it's a desktop, i recommend getting a mid end nvidia graphics card, then overclocking it using ntune, remembering to apply advanced gpu cooling. better fans, bigger fans, liquid cooling system if you have the dough. :p (if so, i recommend using beer instead of water)

this way, you don't have to spend too much extra money on a better graphics card.

however, you may have to consider that high end cards offer more vram. your call.

                Thanks.

JXY, I'm not sure what you're suggesting is a good idea . . . consider how much cooling like that would cost, add that to a mid range card (name one if you like) and then compare that to the cost of a better card, then compare the performance.  Just my £0.02.

nvidia geforce 6600 would be a mid-range card.

cost-wise, you could be quite right.

maybe get a bigger heat sink?

getting a new video card could be a problem too, because you have to take a look at your motherboard to see if it's 100% compatible.

A 6600 is a very old mid range card, it won't cope with modern games.  Even with a very high end cooling system costing hundreds of dollars, it wouldn't come near a new card for, say, $150.
Just think on a bit before posting advice like that.

                    It's an example, purposely exaggerated.
Seriously though, if you can find a 6600GT, add a replacement cooling system, and then overclock it to match the performance of a newer card costing the same, I would be very surprised.  Whatever you do, that card will not handle modern games.

guess it's time for a new card.

                      again, check for compatibility.  :)
